Well we saw this coming didn’t we! Looks like the piedfort Sovereign is going to be an annual thing.

I’ve also called it on the plain edge. Anyone willing to wager against? :D

Seriously though, with the regular 2018 Proof, the Sapphire Coronation SOTD, the upcoming Prince George’s 5th Birthday Sovereign and now the Piedfort, followed by the inevitable Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday SOTD, we’re  looking at another ridiculous year.

Oh, and they’ll do the Five Piece BU too. That’s already an annual thing.

I feel like the Sovereign is moving over from being a special annual coin to becoming an annual joke.

Didn't really want it to be an annual thing but I kind of thought it would be.

Same here. Seems like they do something special and then dilute its uniqueness by repeating it :-/

When is Charles' bday?
I will happily Strike on the Day (plain edge) [emoji4]
I don't think Prince Charles would be described as a "Plain Edge"?

Any suggestions - maybe have a " Prickly Edge"?

Or change the Obverse initials to PC?

Disappointing that the 2017 offerings are not unique, already plain edge SotD 2018 and now the Piedfort.

Interesting that they are now Royal Family themed.  Can only be  matter of time until the marketing is taken over by the Franklin Mint and distributed via the red top Sunday's!;  "The Soveriegn style coin layered in 22ct. gold!"  "available with payment in convenient monthly instalments"

The great news is that 2017 remains special as it was a celebration of the coin itself and that is what like 1989 will keep it VERY special.

2017 piedfort is still special being the very first one ever in history. Happy with that :) Wont be buying any following years. No need to. Got the “special” PF70 first year :P

The piedfort is a grained edge btw, unless you are referring to the single sovs. It will be interesting to see. We don’t know yet as so far it is only last year’s 200 yeat 1817 anniversary sotd and the queen’s sotd coronation......definitely going to be worth watching the next sotd date for clues going forward.

Good to see there is no 65 privy mark on the piedfort, assuming I am reading the gazette right. If so, it would make it the first “standard” piedfort sovereign issued.

Oh no! I'm going to HAVE to buy one :D

The old gal is actually in her 67th year of her reign for the purests. This year is the 65 anniversary of her coronation......so 3 and a half years to go for her next plain edge ?

Given at Our Court at Buckingham Palace, this twenty-third day of May in the year of Our Lord Two thousand and eighteen and in the sixty-seventh year of Our Reign.

If you think hard enough, it is neverending ! My advice, don’t think too hard.......it just causes problems :D Going forward, it may well, imo, drive collectors towards earlier “modern” sovereign proofs :)

These gimmick coins really do separate those who collect as a hobby and those who seek a profit.

A joke perpetuated by clowns.

Consider this: The SOTD coin had a mintage of 650 and it sold out really quickly. Were you surprised? I wasn't, considering that 66% of them were bought for re-sale or 'to flip'.

Some time in November. I feel like his may be a regular Sovereign- meaning without the 65 privy mark and having the reeded edge, similar to what they’ll do for Prince George’s birthday next month. I sense they’ll do the same thing they did last year with the Sapphire Jubilee and the Platinum Wedding Anniversary Sovereigns, where they released like 750 first and then another 750 with the same design later.

Yes I was referring to the single Sovereigns having the plain edge. I’ve said before (and I stick to my words) that the plain edge on the regular Sovereign will become an annual thing.

I hope they don’t. And then next year another piedfort without the privy. There’s no end to the madness

In three years they can celebrate QE II’s 95th birthday with another obverse ?

Sorry I meant I would happily strike Charles on the day with something with a plain edge...a cricket bat perhaps :)

That is fine. I will not be participating in that. Coronation sotd, I did and will buy the next one in 5 years from now. Hope the grand lady is still going.
