cinereus reacted to FoolzGold in Sold all my gold, got stung
Always feels like it's worth reviving this thread when gold climbs to a new high.
As a reminder :
April 2017 - guy joined forum and asked for advice on which coins to buy. Following the excellent advice of the users here he bought:
3 x Britannia (2016, 2017)
1 x Queen's Beasts Lion
2 x Queen's Beasts Dragon
2 x Queen's Beasts Griffin
November 2018 - without asking anyone's advice he panicked and sold them at melt price (maybe £930/oz) to Atkinsons, who turned around and sold them on their site for £1300+ each.
Value today? Spot price around £1250/oz, roughly 35% above the spot price at the time he panicked. Resale value of those QBs? Probably at least 30% higher still. I'd say he'd have been looking at maybe 75% more today on those QB's than he sold them for 9 months ago.
Quote: "I'm just glad I got out of it before I lost even more."

The best bit was...
HGM were on a daily fix then. They fixed, went home and had gone to bed.
As the results came in, the (open) markets reacted and gold spiked!
HGM were still on the daily fix...kerrrrrching!

cinereus reacted to Glorfindel in Sold all my gold, got stung
Rubbish - nobody in their right mind would pay 200-300 over spot for those coins (and I would not trust anyone who offered).
But even if you are right, I've made over £1k back already from just putting the cash into a LISA. Gotta love free govt money. So no, I don't regret it. I'm not sure why people are so keen that I should.... my only regret is buying the gold in the first place.
-
cinereus reacted to Glorfindel in Sold all my gold, got stung
LISA.
As for people telling me I should have sold here, maybe, but I don't regret not doing so. Extra stress and delay for a few hundred quid is not worth it, for me anyway.
@sixgun Yes, you are right re sterling, but it comes to the same thing - Brexit is going to be resolved one way or another (either we get a deal or we don't leave), and that can only have a negative impact on the price of gold.

100oz and 1kg. Premiums depend on order quantity. It's still high (VAT), but better than anywhere else. Even our European friends are buying from the UK at the moment which is ironic.

It might well be at some point in the future, for better or worse!
3%...5% premium- I guess we all position ourselves where we see fit.
I paid a 25% premium on a Gold coin this evening and I'm well chuffed.
Night.

Chard guy ( @LawrenceChard ) would you be interested in a Q and A thread? You probably have more knowledge that all of us. It’s very interesting hearing from the owner of one of the biggest/best dealers in the uk

As mentioned precious metals are measured in troy oz. So a metal oz should be troy weight

cinereus reacted to LawrenceChard in RMS Douro Shipwreck Sovereign
The Coinworld article is informative, I think I remember reading it before,
The NGC page also makes sense, mainly.
So, shipwreck sovereigns are likely to be unharmed by their immersion in salt water, and most will have remained in the conditon they were when their ship sank.
At the time, we did not participate in any of the Douro auctions, but not for any particular reason, and we were busy in any case.
Whenever there is a big coin hoard, or wreck recovery, there is always plenty of publicity, and a degree of hype.
There are effects on both supply and demand. Suddenly there is a greater than normal supply on the market, but also greater interest stimulated by the publicity.
The increased supply can depress prices, whereas the increased interest can increase them.
For the collector who is nore interested in acquiring something "new", it might not matter if he pays a premium price. For others, ther might be the opportunity to grab a few bargains.
The "Douro", or other wreck / hoard provenance will usually remain with the coins, which can never be a bad thing.
My view, when wearing my dealer's hat, is to buy and value the coin on its own merits, rather than because it is from a particular source.
When it comes to selling, I might just be tempted to allow the provenance to add some value, though!

cinereus reacted to LawrenceChard in GOLD DEALS - (UK & Europe) See a deal, post it here
Don't you start!
We have been having discussions about this for some time now.
My view is that it means exactly what it sounds like.
"Mint" would mean “in mint condition” (but don't forget that can be highly variable), so "minty" should logically mean something slightly different.
It implies a degree of approximation, which might vary depending on context, so a roll of Edward VII "minty" sovereigns might not be quite as good as a roll of George V or Elizabeth II.
As it happens, I think all our 1932 10 guilders would easily qualify for an MS grade on the Sheldon scale, rather than AU.
On that note, "MS" stands for "Mint State", and MS grades go from MS60 to MS70.
AU, standing for "Almost Uncirculated", goes from AU50 to AU59.
My colleague, Ian, thinks "minty" is too inexact to use, but I disagree, and consider that its very inexactitude makes it a perfect word, and very concise.
A few years ago, a well-known Yorkshire dealer offered me some "minty" sovereigns, and I believe that the two of us had a perfect understanding of what that meant, which is great communication.
Having cited one anecdote, more years ago, a well-respected Italian dealer offered us a quantity of older sovereigns which he described as "F.D.C.", when they arrived, they ranged from good VF to about EF, but certainly not F.D.C., which has a very exact meaning, so this was poor communication from him. (We still trade together).
To replace the word "minty", we would have to say something like "quite close to mint condition, give or take, and allowing for age, etc."
BTW, the Royal Mint have registered "Minty" as a trade mark, but they have no objection to us using the word when describing coins.
-
cinereus reacted to LawrenceChard in GOLD DEALS - (UK & Europe) See a deal, post it here
Most of our stock of them are minty 1932 ones as per the photos, but the deal price is for "our choice".
We do normally ask more for minty specific dates (we need to make a profit on some things).
Being pedantic, there is an error on our page.
Where we say "Original Price", this is misleading and illogical nonsense, for few reasons.
The real original price was almost certainly 10 guilders, not £279.86!; and price we quote changes with spot gold price; I very much doubt the original price changed all the time.
What we should say is "normal price" or "usual price".
I did notice this idiocy on a different product on our site about a week ago, but it looks like we have not got around to fixing it. Grrrr!
