  1. 1917 London sov is a particularly tricky year. Mintage was not that low (1.000.000 if i m not mistaken) but most of them were sent away to the US to pAy a debt and melted down. But of course some (how many??) survived. It is worth now 10-15 grand because the known population is very low, but what if more pops up?

last but not least there are a lot of 1917 counterfeit sovs aRound from other mints, with the mint mark taken away to look like a London one.

  2. hi guys (and girls); being a little bored (ATH doesnt help if you are in a position where you wanna buy... ) i thought maybe a little quiz would have been funny... here you find 9 sovereigns, can you tell me the exact year for each of them? some are very easy, some other less..  there can be only 1 answer per coin and please motivate your choice. Use the sequence i am using like

    1) 1992

    2) 2034

    3) 1050 etc etc etc

being a quiz try to answer without watching other users' answers first...when they made this quiz to me, i got 8 out of 9 (nerd..)

i call the game on friday at midnight! let's go (no prizes apart from being crowned sovereign expert) LETS GO!

Best read lots of books, and ask for advice when needed…

I feel there is a vic Missing there…

    there should be 3;

shield small head, shield large head, st george and dragon

  4. Its pretty much what i wrote on another thread (1874 London shield sov, 9-10 !!! available on sovereign rarities website). I kind of find the r4 totally wrong but i understand SH being in a tricky position (if he downrate the 1874 to r3 or r2, he should cut the prices of all his pieces..)

as for the ansell, True that 250.000 were originally minted, but my understanding is that , because of the brittle gold used, most of them just cracked and were melted immediately after coinage. Hence the real figures are Way different. Also it is a very rare coin in high grades (au58 >). If i m not mistaken there are aRound 14-15 combining NGC-PCGS population

The truth about grading is that it is NOT scientific. The Sheldon scale includes eye appeal as one of the valid descriptors of grade in MS grade. Eye appeal is totally subjective.

i am not a huge fan of slabs. However i am a huge fan of sovereigns.... )

Early shields sovereigns are often badly strucked. And the 3 lions on the reverse are usually the first to show that weakness. But it cant be confused with wear (and the lustre tells it); what you see (like for this 1841) is how the coin left the mint.

  6. not sure this is an already public news.. but i spotted sone clues on Heritage website few days ago... and my understanding is that the Ezen (or part of) sovereign dreamy collection will be auctioneed as of next May in the US

i m talking about dozens and dozens of incredibly high graded coins. And not gillicks.. but pre victorian... and shields. Ms 65-66 in most cases

Just to give you an idea... there will be "the" 1841 sovereign graded MS65+ (top pop of course, and it will fetch 100.000 USD imo). As there will be an official date i ll post some pics; they will be way too expensive for poor blokes like me, but at least images are (still) for free.

I ll try to get my hands on the paper catalogue, at least!

  7. Hope for you he will decline your offer. Those coins will be a pain to sell for a reasonable price./ margin. This set is not rare at all, just expensive. It shows up in every single decent Auction and collectors are pretty demanding when it comes to proofs

  8. If you buy this set to re sell, as it looks, i would never do that!!…

these are coins For collectors, not stackers. If a collector is to spend few quids he will always (i dare say) choose to walk the extra mile and get a better one.
i personally would never enjoy this set even bought for 5000 gbp. I d rather spend 8000-9000 and hold somethin woooow.
