It's impossible to get a fair trade with silver and gold because of the premium and VAT, I mean nobody buys silver premium and vat free do they?

Sure, it was your avatar that confused me! 😉
I ask because I'm in my 6th decade of life and I don't know what is around the corner.
I always read 'for the long term' or 'for my kids' yet it's alien to me. I haven't had that option.
Wait. What? Gold has been available for ever so why are people stacking 'for the long term' now when there wasn't that option before?
It seems that silver and gold have become the greatest asset class available. Well, since 2011 that is.
Don't give your kids gold. They know less what to do with it than you do. Should they leave it to their kids?
Use your gold. Buy bricks and mortar and land when everyone else has to sell. Spend it when it's most wanted.
As for inheritance, don't die a rich man. 😉

I can sell a 10 oz bar for £230 on my buyers club.
Undercut the dealer selling price and get a better price for a seller.
Split the difference and say no to the rip off!

@artalien's advice is sound.  Make a few small sales - a few brits or small bars to establish that you're a real person, and you can sell here at a far better price than you'd get from a jeweller.  Also, you'll be able to buy at a decent price as well.
Sadly, VAT and the dealer prices make silver very inefficient for saving if you don't know where to look.  On the secondary market it is possible to buy and sell silver at more sane spreads, so getting to know the folks here will get you a market where you can buy and sell silver much more efficiently.
Consider also getting some gold - half sovs, or if you're really on a budget, 1g Tavex bars are pretty good value.

I'm probably repeating what others have said, but fractional gold will always be liquid and, unless you are forced to sell for spot (or 97% 😟), the premium you pay at purchase will generally be recouped at sale.
One ounce coins have the lowest premium but unless you plan to liquidate at a dealer, you may struggle to find a buyer as the gold price increases. I was drawn to this route but soon changed tack as I found I was was getting too many cheeky offers.
I suggest smaller gold coins have to rise in popularity.
A few years ago, a sovereign was £200, now a half sovereign is £200. An ounce was £800 and now 1/2 ounce is £800. This is because our fiat currency is depreciating yet our wages are not doubling to cover this. Sure, if our wages had increased 100% in the last few years, an ounce would be just as easily affordable.
    (I'm specifically talking about bullion)
