Just thought about giving an update on this topic. I went ahead with buying that US Mint box specifically for this damaged 1986 Proof ASE coin.

Could not be happier with the result.  


 


This box cost me 8€, but it was damn worth it in my opinion

Hello fellow stackers! I start off by wishing you all a great 2024.

I have one of those "good" problems to solve, which I would ask your opinion. 

Just this week I ordered 5 Bullion American Silver Eagles, since I am gradually completing a tube.
To my surprise, the dealer sent 4 bullion, plus one 1986 Proof Silver Eagle ("S" Mintage). However, this Proof coin came without the box or certificate. Probably that was why they sold it to me as a normal Bullion.

I would love to maximize the "collectible" value of this coin. What should I do?

Although I never bought anything from TSF, I totally agree with you. I am not so often logging in this Forum but every single time I needed answers, there was always someone around to help.

Those sections are within the Premium Members Club, these were created from member's requests. You are welcome to discuss Sovereigns and Panda coins in the General Precious Metals, Gold, and Silver sections of the forum which are open to all members including FREE standard members. And there are indeed many many topics about such coins in those sections of the forum.

Hey 👋, I completely understand your point of view. Like you I’m from the EU and Portugal especially has one of the worst customs authorities in the world (said the DHL Portugal agent). If you noticed in my post I did say that I knew when joining that it wasn’t about being able to buy and sell for me, for all the reasons you state. I joined the silver membership because I received a lot of great advice from members and learned a lot from reading other posts. So the crunch of what I was saying was that the buying and selling is a bonus but supporting TSF (like people do with Patreon accounts) is for me a big THUMBS UP 👍 to say thank you 🙏 

This post is really for all non paying TSF members. However it will probably resonate with a lot of paid members too.

When I started buying precious metals years ago it wasn't a problem, as I would buy current year silver and gold bullion, and directly from very reputable online dealers. As the years went on I started getting more interested in older coins, sovereigns to be specific. However I had very little, to no knowledge on what to look for. So as I started to do research online and TSF posts kept coming up. So one day I decided to join. It's great that you can get so much information on here and post questions without being a paid member. I learned so much just from being in the background and reading all the new threads and responses. 
So a little time later after becoming acquainted to the site, I bit the bullet and started a new topic. I can't remember what my first question was, but all I can remember that after all the responses, it saved me making a very costly purchase on a coin. I continued to stay on as a free member for a little while longer, mostly because I didn't have the time to be more active, and  then found I had to ask another question. Again loads of responses and very helpful advice from members. 
I then took a moment and thought to myself. If it wasn't for TSF, I could have lost a lot of money, and also not made purchases that I would have normally passed on. So I decided to become a silver premium member. I pay £5.99 a month (the price of a coffee and croissant in London) and off course with becoming a paid member I can buy and sell on here, but that wasn't my intention. I knew it would be very unlikely that I would buy much due to the fact that I currently live in Portugal. I did it because I wanted to support the forum, due to how members have helped me. On a side note, if you are in the UK and are interested in buying PM's (Precious Metals), then there are some amazing deals to be had on here. I cry sometimes at how cheap things are, compared to dealers, ebay and over here in Portugal. I really don't care if the owner is making a big profit or not. They are providing a safe, friendly and very helpful service, that I hope to be part of for many years to come. 
So for the sake of £5.99 a month, I would highly suggest you get your credit/debit cards out, buy a premium membership, and support TSF. It's money well spent and if you're buying PM's. you'll save that several times over when you make a purchase.

I think it is a little bit more valuable than the normal bullion, but it arrived from the store with no certificate of authenticity.

What should I do with it?

I have an aztec 5 ounce that I bought marked (off a member on here) I use as a coin I handle & let bronze.

Back in my home country (Portugal), unfortunately there are not many Silver Eagles availble for purchase. One mostly has to buy from Spain, with some hefty premiums and transport costs. Who knows!

Even with case COA it’s worth about £45 not worth pursuing its bullion with the marks now anyway 👍🏻

Just count yourself lucky and keep it is bullion? Or sell it for a slightly higher price... Since it's scuffed and scratched, it's not worth a great deal more imo

It really depends on whether those marks on the fields are scratches from an attempt to clean it, or scratches on the capsule (I can't really tell from the photos).  If it's in good nick it might be worth getting graded, otherwise there's probably nothing much you can do.  Proof ASE's aren't worth all that much on the secondary market - I bought a 2006 proof ASE in pretty good nick (and the packaging was still pretty decent) for £40.  A damaged one without a COA isn't worth much more than bullion.
On the plus side, 1986 is a key date, being the first year ASE's were minted, so if it's in an even remotely gradeable state (say: PF67 or better) then you might get the cost of grading back in the sale price.  If it's been cleaned (i.e. the surface is damaged) then it will come back with a details grade, and probably won't be worth much more than bullion, plus you're out the cost of grading.

So glad I didn't sell them when I had them listed.

This may work in the UK, but here in the states this will absolutely not fly if the customs officer is competent.

Was only half an hour while a customs agent double checked the law, this why I'm currently trying to expand my gold jewellery, if need be next time I'm going to wear my wealth out of the country, Mr T Jnr coming through.

You should be okay with your plan. I used to bring back coins from Singapore, mostly maples as they were vat free and lower premiums at the time but was always well under 10k, always had receipts and never got stopped. I tried to send haggis to the States as part of a hamper once but that triggered all the alarm bells and didn’t end well.
