  1. I think it may be time for RM to stop with the edge lettering - they clearly are having issues with it, one series you can understand but to do it again is just silly. Also, I’m going to say it, I once thought QC were the issue but again, some of the issues presented are as clear as day so at this point including multi-series feedback on QC issues - either management at RM is aware and letting these coins be sent or QC is just a sticker they put on. Even if RM are setting the QC bar low, they must know these coins will be returned. Again, QC on the odd coin or a particular series is feasible and understandable but this is becoming too common place at this point.

The coins by the way do look stunning, I regretted not by the 5oz and I think I still have that regret after seeing them in hand.

What would B.P say about the Mints works today, what have they done to his masterpeice over time?

George on the left is how B.P intended him to look, on the right is how he looks on the 2024 sovereign, I reckon if he was still alive he woud probably sue.

That’s an awful drop in detail from the original. To be honest the new great engravers lack some the finer detail in my opinion, aspects like the horses tail and plumes just lack the detail of the original. Just to note, I still really like the new GEs and they are miles better than the sovereign above. Just commenting the originals have way better strikes if you can find a nice one and the detail in them is ridiculously fine

Im not going to get into a deep convo over this silly comment, what I will say is this.. This forum does not live on flipping for profit, that's for ebay.. the forum sees many many many sales at great prices and the buyers would not buy at super inflated flipper prices.. we buy at prices generally lower than dealers prices so I would certainly not describe that as flipping,.. its more a case of moving stuff on to buy something else, or selling the stack to fund other purchases such as property etc.. I'm sorry you feel that the forum is reeling of skulduggery and flippery .. actually, no I'm not! This forum is fantastic and I wouldn't live without it, as the saying goes, if you don't like it scroll on..

I mean, this one looks a bit more like a My Little Pony than a unicorn so I assumed somebody had hurt the original unicorn that appeared on all the shields

  4. The Great Engravers aren’t meant to be bullion so you can expect to pay a premium for the work that went in to the design and minting process. As people have mentioned, their presentation boxes and capsules add to the costs. Then you pay a premium because it’s one of the RM’s flagship range and I expect RM wants a bigger slice of the pie after previous GEs went for stupid prices.

The mint are confident they’ll sell the GEs at this price, which leaves the decision down to us to understand if it’s a coin you want to invest in. It’s like Adidas make trainers but they sell some version for more because it’s their premium range and the demand is there. Probably less dust in a shoebox than a RM capsule but that’s a different conversation.

Buying new coins purely to make a profit is a massive gamble.

I liked this release and picked up a 5 Oz silver and the 2 oz gold.

Silver I buy what I like the look of rather than for any potential up tick in price. 2 Oz gold is a fine looking coin and the different finish intrigued me.

Won't be grading any of them as like them as they are in proof format.

Pay your money and take your choice. Would guard against hoping to make a quick profit on any of them though

Once you receive the gold, post some pics as I agree the finish is a major positive - will be interesting how this looks in hand but I think it’ll be a winner if you get an issue free one from RM.

Grading them will be interesting, anything with a matte finish always feels like a gamble with NGC, I’d probably do the same mate and not grade them especially if you are holding them.

It is an interesting outlook on things for sure. I know there are a few people on here who were addicted to gambling, but no longer are and instead spend their money on coins like these.

But in so many ways, it just feels like another form of gambling.

This statement is spot on, it’s tough not just to jump on every release or deal. Trying to take that step back and understand what is happening is a skill many of us have partially mastered in my opinion but sometimes you chase something and get your fingers burnt. Then hindsight sets in and you have to take the loss and learn the lessons. I am now buying coins I like and if I’m stuck with them I’m fine as I want them in my collection anyway.

The amount of mints, the amount of releases, the quality issues from one particular mint I like to buy coins from, the new world of grading (and what this means to a coin) and things likes milk spotting just add to the complexity of buying moderns. I think comparing this to gambling is probably a suitable comparison.

I wonder what people think these coins will sell for once the fuss dies down?

    2oz silver ?

    5oz silver ?

    10 oz silver ?

    2 oz gold ?

I be honest and say after watching this series from the start, I don't have a clue 😀

2oz silver - no premium, just for collectors to enjoy

5oz silver - I expect a small premium if they grade well (PF69 will holds its value, PF68 the world has ended and the feelings of despair hit home)

10oz silver - deffo keeps its value, its low mintage is a good thing but I think again it may have a premium if it grades well

2oz gold - I like it a lot, I think it’s a good investment but I doubt it’ll replicate the heights of Una or Graces but who knows. With Una (once the market spoke) and to a degree the Graces, the FOMO and hysteria were ridiculous and unfortunately or fortunately depending, that market and demand has gone or certainly reduced to normality

I think the value of the silver range especially the 2oz is limited as you can literally buy an original 1818-1820 crown at a reasonable price and if you get a nice one they are way better than this range in my opinion. You also, get the original obverse which is a different level to the portrait on this coin. Also, the historic strikes are different to the modern strikes and I really like how the old presses struck the designs.

I was thinking how strange it must have been in 1818 when coins in pocket change were likely prooflike master pieces 😂

Well, you’ve all cleaned them out at the mint🤔😮not quite sure who the flippers are going to sell too as whoever buys off them must be strangely desperate.

more of a coin to hold🤔

Said this earlier this week, you need to find a buyer who is willing to pay more for a 2024 Great Engravers rather than buying a high quality original 1818-1820 crown. Regardless, I do like the 5oz silver especially with the size of the coin but would I overspend massively on one, probably not as you can find amazing originals in that price range. It’s becoming more difficult but you can still find them.

How many George and Dragons do we need?

There are millions and millions of them on millions and millions of coins

This release is going to crash and burn.

Strictly for the collector, this will not be an investment opportunity. IMHO

Don’t think it will crash and burn but I don’t believe this will be a huge flipping opportunity either. Definitely a coin for the collectors with the potential of a small rise on RRP if the mintage is low.

My logic for this is pretty simple, Una at PF70 was going for £5k+ for the 2oz silver but that didn’t out value the original coins (obviously wasn’t even close). You can get an 1818 - 1820 crown in high grade from £1k and certainly a top example for £5k. I can’t see anybody paying silly amounts of money for a 2024 coin when you can buy an original example.

I am excited for this coin, will be interesting to see what RM have done with the design but if you buy as a collector then regardless of the secondary market you’ll be happy. How many of us received the Gothic Crown Reverse and thought this is a true work of art and RM had done an amazing job only for the secondary market to not really appreciate this design for numerous reasons.

John Mercanti is a marketed creation.  He designs a lot of coins, but not many would be considered great IMO.  It’s all marketing.  Everywhere you turn here in the U.S., another Mercanti coin pops up.  He is saturating the market.  Just my opinion.

I think this is a very fair point, the design is just a bit meh. There needs to be movement when adding animals to a coin, also what they are meant to represent is completely missed by this design. If you want a coin of a lion sitting next to an eagle then this meets the remit - if you want a coin representing nationhood, alliance, friendship and joint venture then this isn’t it.  I mean the amazing historic coins with lions and eagles on should have acted as an inspiration.

Wrong place - moved to the right place

  12. Just not feeling RM designs at the moment. The current animals look like they are extras from the Lion King. Also, not sure they had to write down what the animals are on the coin either.

It may just be me but the Great Engravers have me craving traditional designs again. I struggle with the modern takes that RM seem to be fascinated with at present.

Okay, so this is what I would’ve done if this were offered to me AND if I had the funds… I’d buy it! 😀

Although I’m not a fan of graded coins, and especially in this case since the whole point is the edge lettering which is hidden by the slab, I think it’s a pretty good price.

I’d personally not be turned off by the 69 grade because I’d probably attempt to break them out of their holders and put them back in their original Royal Mint holders. (Blasphemy?! LOL)

The original RM holders are made in a way that magnifies the edge lettering (I have the silver set), and the original presentation box too is gorgeous.

You’ve hit my nerve of low graded British proofs because of toning or historical coins with details grades because there is small scratch somewhere or somebody cleaned it gently 200 years ago. I like slabs for storage, protection, to a degree authentication and they can be easier to sell but people need to buy the coin and not the grade. The fact there is people cracking them out to re-submit to get a different grade shows this is no precise science.
