Anyone else still waiting on a half? Very envious of all the photos from people so far.

I’d get in touch with them. I was in the same situation, so I contacted them Friday. It turns out the authorisation from my card payment had “dropped off” (as it has taken them so long to get them ready) and no one from the RM had bothered to get in touch with me. I emailed them and they asked me to phone them up to get the payment taken again. Shambles. I felt for bloke on the phone, sounded like he was at his wits end.

Depends what we deem a winner, but in terms of desirability and importance yes, 100% its going to be desirable and important forever more. Its a superb design and the first sovereign of a new monarch and we shouldn’t let the madness of release days distract us from the bigger picture.

Its only in very recent years have any coins sold out in the first days / few hrs (since mid 2020) and that was due to the very weird and pumpy environment we were in. 1989, 2002, 2005, 2012, 2016 & 2017 and everything in between took days if not weeks (and probably months on the early ones). These will all be sold out soon enough if that is what some measure success by.

In terms of mintages these (the 5 and 2 anyway) are low for proof coronation / first of a monarch sovereign sets if you look at anything from Edward VII 1902 proof set onwards. Regardless of what comes, this set is as important as any sovereign set that marked a new monarch and also rarer than most, with the odd exception (1953 for example). Arguably for Sovereign collectors, particularly type collectors this is the most significant and important release in 85yrs, since George VI.

1902 5 coin proof set 8,000 ish sets

    1911 5 coin proof set - 2,800 ish sets

    1937 5 coin proof set - 5,001 sets

    1953 5 coin proof set - 3 or 4 sets

2022 5 coin proof set (KCIII) - 1200 sets (less than 2000 2 Sovereigns in total)

as something to think about, even the 1839 Una has reported mintage of 400 and I doubt that fully accounts for the extra’s struck in the years following 1839.

i grade so I've picked up a few sets todays where I could, i’ll put a 5 coin 70 set together and then move the rest on, a  profit would be nice but not essential.

These are superb and i think once im hand collectors will be very reluctant to let them go.

Thank you for such a detailed and considered response. I think you hit the nail on the head here: "in terms of desirability and importance yes, 100% its going to be desirable and important forever more. Its a superb design and the first sovereign of a new monarch and we shouldn’t let the madness of release days distract us from the bigger picture." 👏

I'll be thrilled when mine arrives (all being well with the infamous Llantrisant QC!) and can't wait to see it up close... even if I have to squint and imagine that JC included a daff with the other floral symbols! 😝

You're right its been quick short and sweet. Normally when you see it on daily mail, the sun and the one show on BBC it's a big release

Possibly as they are collecting funds now and know it's not dispatching until mid Jan maybe to soft l/ under the radar launch today.maybe ??

Yes good point and as there's plenty more to come in 2023 they may be pacing themselves, there'll be plenty of low hanging PR fruit in the run up to the coronation.

  4. Might be still too early to tell whether this release will prove to be a winner or a flop, but as a relative newcomer, one thing I would query is how has the PR/communications campaign for this release been handled compared to previous releases?

As someone who works in mar/comms I was surprised about the relatively short lead-time from announcement and the fairly sparse promotion on social media channels. This could be pretty standard so perhaps I'm wide of the mark as I have no professional experience in the marketing of numismatics / RM collectibles.

For me, the marketing - whilst clearly reaching its core audience (i.e. TSF) - does seem very low key.

    Here's what I've learned.

Buy because you love the design, nothing else.

In the hope you get a good coin, be happy with that.

If an opportunity arises that you can make a few pound the next day or a year later, great.

But go into it viewing it like this, I really like the design and I'm happy for it to only be worth melt "worst case scenario "

I do expect them to do well, but from experience I also expect whatever idea you have to cover yourself, thousands of others have the same idea. Market gets diluted and value drops, happened with every release so far and this will be no different.

Buy proofs because you want them is the message I'm trying to get across. Hold for 5 years and you should do well.

Good advice and this will be my mindset attempting to get my annual half on Tuesday.

Same with mine. Dont panic like I did 😄 I rang the RM twice and my bank to find out what had happened.

Pending payment only stays on the system for so many days until it drops back into your account, then shows as no transaction. This is normal apparently 🙂

Your jealousy is blinded by reason 🤣

Just checked my bank and in the same position, glad I've seen this post or I'd have wasted some time on the phone this afternoon!
