  1. Sovereigns are 22ct or 916 fine gold as mentioned by others. If you're interested in 999 fine gold, then there is the option of 1/4 ounce Britannia but they are slightly more expensive due to higher gold content. The pure gold content of a sovereign is 7.32g verses 7.75g for a 1/4 ounce Britannia. I would personally buy sovereigns with the lowest premium and at best quality. Once you have acquired a few sovereigns of different types (monarchs), then you should be able to decide on your personal preference. Welcome to the forum BTW.

  9. Many years ago, I had a college friend from Vietnam. One lunchtime I asked him how long he had lived in the UK. It transpired that he was a refugee. He and his family left Saigon by boat in mid 1970s during civil war. They paid to be smuggled into Hong Kong as refugees. When I asked how much per head, he said didn't know as he was young but was aware they had to pay in gold to smugglers. I asked how come his family had so much gold. He said his grandma owned a gold jewellery store. He recounted that all the remaining gold jewellery they had were either sown into clothes or stuffed into hollowed out platform shoes before leaving. Quite an interesting story I thought at the time. Years later, I met a vietnamese couple. I retold the story to them about my college friend and that they had to pay in gold to be smuggled out. They answered yes, no smugglers would accept paper money. Whoever wants to leave had to pay in gold. They said the going rate when they left was 6-7 tael of gold and some smugglers wanted more. Each tael is approx 1.2 ounces so about 7-8.5 ounces per head. They recounted that many boats were over capacity. Some of them sank and goodness knows how much gold were left at the bottom of the sea. That's a when SHTF story for you !
  10. It doesn't seem that long ago when I was buying an ounce of gold for around £720. I stopped buying when it hit over a grand mark around 2017. With hindsight, I should have continued buying and not waited until 2020. Be careful what you wish for coz it won't be pretty.
  11. I have some genuine fake coins to sell if anyone is interested ! 😎
  12. Checked out this Youtube channel. The chap on there makes short videos on precious metals. On some videos, how to spot and test for fakes. https://m.youtube.com/user/CyberCurtainTwitcher/videos
  13. Yes, unfortunately for you they are too good to be true! As mentioned above, if you are looking to start collecting coins then buy from reputable dealers. Otherwise, you could be wasting your cash.
  14. Let's be realistic. Do you really expect to pay 3 sought-after silver coins for USD45 ? If these were genuine, then the silver content alone (spot price of silver) for these three coins would be more USD45. Learn from experience. We have all been there.
  15. Hello! Welcome to the forum. At first glance they don't look great. The strike and colour of the coins are highly suspect, especially the Morgan dollar. The 1911 Trade dollar is a common year for fakes. Sorry to say none of them look genuine from those pictures. You could easily confirm whether or not they are silver by the specific gravity test method. If you are new to coin collecting my advice would be to buy from reputable and established coin dealers near you.
  16. Who does that - Would it not rot below ground unless it is zero degree !? In the days before refrigerators, people cured meat - wind / sun dried or with salt. Back on topic: a very interesting find. How many of us would not take a few coins before announcing our discovery !? 😬🤔
  17. All you chaps are being harsh. Without Mr Wonger, a contrarian from dreamland this thread would have been dull and lacking entertainment value. 😁 Price of gold at the time of writing - £1426 (USD1928).
