Grading newbie

Hi all,

I'm investing around £6,000.00 in a single silver coin with numismatic value right now.  I plan to send it for grading and haven't done it before.  Any guide and advice on options and pricing?  Also how is the process flow?  Appreciate some pointers.

D'Angelo

PS: not revealing the coin yet until it's in my hands ;)

The main grading companies are PCGS and NGC.

TSF’s official grading partner for NGC is COTR @CoinsOfTheRealmAuctions. Please see the topic here:

There are also other business members on the forum who offer grading services via one or both of the main grading companies (PCGS & NGC).

You can also self grade.

If you are new to this then point plank don't put 6k into it if you can not afford to lose it.

I grade £100,00's worth of coins some can do well others have been a total car crash, you are right at the start and asking a very big question. Start off small get to know the process but not only that you really need to learn the coin market which can't be done over night.

Good look with your journey let us all know what you buy with your 6k and how much profit you make.

Thanks for the advice, very welcomed.  I'm not looking to flip/sell the coin - just feel it would be better graded so when the kids want to liquidate it then it would be certified authentic and hopefully easier to sell than just loose without supporting documents.  Secondly, not many of these coins are around, so it will be cool to have it officiated into the "population".  I think I will try NGC.

Out of interest, how much will NGC in the UK charge you to grade one coin?

I thought about doing similar for investment purposes but then realised I just don't know enough. Even if it's a very rare coin, there are so many factors that could potentially mean it doesn't get a good grading. Was it cleaned at some point? Perhaps it's been professionally repaired and only an expert will be able to tell. Maybe it's been artificially toned to add value or perhaps it was extracted from a jewellery piece. Realised I couldn't personally answer many of these questions (and more) with anywhere near enough certainty. Then there's the potential issue of rarity not necessarily meaning desirable at some point in the distant future.

It is not my intention to try and put you off but just to raise a few things that I imagine you've already considered. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that! If you're feeling confident then best of luck to you. Hope it gets the grading you're looking for and that it turns out to be a gem for your kids.
