    Grading newbie

Thanks for the advice, very welcomed. I'm not looking to flip/sell the coin - just feel it would be better graded so when the kids want to liquidate it then it would be certified authentic and hopefully easier to sell than just loose without supporting documents. Secondly, not many of these coins are around, so it will be cool to have it officiated into the "population". I think I will try NGC.

    Grading newbie

Hi all, I'm investing around £6,000.00 in a single silver coin with numismatic value right now. I plan to send it for grading and haven't done it before. Any guide and advice on options and pricing? Also how is the process flow? Appreciate some pointers. D'Angelo PS: not revealing the coin yet until it's in my hands
  3. Try adding a catalyst or Pt or U elements with the ideal critical mass...?
  4. Update - for other members who will find this useful sometime... There are at least 2 coin shops in San Jose: http://www.lapulperianumismatica.com/ Pulpería Numismática, El Carmen, San José Province, San José https://numistorecr.com/ NumiStore, Alondra, San José Province, San Vicente Pulpería Numismática - It's a very small shop with easy parking nearby. Some interesting LATAM coins but mostly smaller sizes and denominations. Price-wise the numismatic stuff seemed ok but the bullion was very pricey ($40 an ounce kind of thing) for basic ASE's and Canadian Maples. They don't sell Gold. I picked up a good grade 1933 Medallin mint Colombian 50 cents (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces20273.html) for a fair price. NumiStore - online shop seems really decent, but I didn't try a vist to their actual shop... D'Angelo
  5. 2023 yeah like I said months ago
  6. So, either I can tell the future or I killed the Queen...?
  7. Yeah i'll be passing by San Jose (@LawrenceChard- it's the Costa Rican capital one) so yeah as I mentioned... any advice on where to buy and what is good to buy in terms of local coins will be helpful.
  8. Any reccomendations on Costa Rican gold and silver coins and where to buy in San Jose?
  9. Agree - only need to test if from an un-trusted source or if you have a reason to suspect.
  10. 1910 1911 1912... hopefully no one replies "nice fakes" cos i paid a lot for these and 2 have certificates
  11. Note on the quality - I got two of the 1oz bars, one is fine the other has a murky patch that could be a milk spot but so far looks more like a weird smudge. So quality on my batch was 50% (1/2 good). Design wise I really like it! They have packaged the 1oz bars very well and the packaging looks great. The reflections from the geometric diamond designs are really good too. I have one of the no time to die bars, and the diamonds are forever bars are way better imho. I'm wanting a 10oz version now but I'm hesitant unless I find a perfectly matching 10oz capsule for it, for some weird reason the 10oz bar is more expensive than getting 10 x 1oz bars and they have put it in crappy plastic instead of a nice packaging or capsule. This makes no sense to me,... how can 10 of the 1oz that are superbly packaged be cheaper than the 10oz bar like that? The lack of logic is hurting my brain, so I've not ordered the 10oz... unless someone shows me the way to a dealer that has perfect fitting capsules
  12. The original artwork for the movie features a "forever" that repeats... erm... "forever"
  13. @BackyardBullion - great effort, looking forward to taking part when everything is ready. Please drop a link in here for everyone if there is a new thread for the actual raffle I hope your raffle raises some mega funds! I have lots of personal connections in Ukraine and I've been directly helping people (p2p, no charity body involved), including moving people over borders and directing people safe passages from violence, sending money, housing refugees, connecting people to share shelter, food, water and medicine. Kiev is getting to be under siege so things are getting worse in terms of supplies and movement of people. But Eastern & Southern cities have it far worse. Some Russian vehicles have been posing as red cross but I've not confirmed these reports with eyewitnesses... if that's true then it will make the red cross have a harder time to move around safely, plus routes over the borders are coming under attack because they are also supply routes for weapons smuggled among the humanitarian aid, so big thanks to the weapons dealers for putting the aid convoys at risk. Anyway, I'll be adding some items for auction (with advance permission of the forum) because I have a friend in Ukraine who is working an assembly line to make bullet proof jackets - because there is a huge shortage. His group need funds for the various materials and resources to produce these and it seems like a noble defensive effort which can save lives. D'Angelo
  14. Can't pick just one, but a few - 2013 royal birth - because it's like the highest quality proof silver depiction of pistrucci's iconic design. 1912 British trade dollar in almost uncirculated condition - because of it's history and imagery and condition Scotsdale aliens!!!! they are just psycadellic... brilliant. Perth mint rectangular dragon proofs - the first proof coins i collected in a full set Could go on... and on... I think about 1/2 of my stack I couldn't sell in my lifetime and the other half is pure investment with no attachment.
  15. I agree - 10% to 15% seems like "normal days" not for times when he thinks he will be down 80% on stocks... if he really thought he would lose 80% on stocks, he would move closer to an "all in" position on gold and possibly other assets. I also disagree on his silver comments - industrial usage is important for silver but i've watched plenty of good vids by experts who saw in history both gold and silver do well in financial crisis histroically, but gold more so... silver should still be in the portfolio. As they say - put your money where your mouth is.. and he hasn't done that.

  17. The coin sounds great and I agree with your sentiments. I think my first trade dollar also has the Bombay mint mark. Surely these coins have inspired lots more after them. Was this the first coin with an "oriental border"? I see it on some Britanias in my collection too. I also like the ship on this coin - it's from a time when sailing ships were already getting out of date and steam ships and engines were coming along. I'm surprised Nemesis isn't on any coins (that I know about) because that would have been an awesome statement during the opium wars, paying for goods in HK with Nemesis dollars haha...
  18. some really healthy prices acheived there for sure
  19. Very interesting... thanks for sharing! It's cool to hear they are popular in Asia still. Maybe still a fair few around in HK and MY/SG. I guess that graded coin's "XF" means extra fine? I'm surprised, the coin I have has lots more detail than that one, perhaps a it's "almost uncirculated" then. I'll share some pics tomorrow. Noted on the pain of checking coins before buying... I feel really annoyed if a modern bullion 1oz silver turns out fake, so getting a fake trade dollar would be up to 100 times wose feeling... gotta watch out.
  20. The chopped ones are cool, i can appreciate why they could be more valuable simply because they show how they were used back in the day. You can sell me some at scrap price if you like hahah
  21. http://www.watchcount.com/completed.php?bkw=british+trade+dollar&bcat=0&bcts=&sfsb=Show+Me!&csbin=all&cssrt=pi&bfw=1&bslr=&bnp=&bxp=#serp Seems to show from £1000 down to £100 range for what sellers call genuine coins. Saw one obvious fake sold for £29. I appreciate the tip on Ebay but I think a lot more coins are sold off of that platform than on it. Their fees mess with the prices and there are a lot of pirates on there of various kinds It's still some kind of indicator though for sure.
  22. Any ideas on the market prices paid for various grades of British trade dollars of various conditions? Are these coins in high demand by collectors? If anyone has some photos to share with some idea on valuation that will be welcome. I'm considering collecting some and want to know what the market is like and if any specific years or mint marks are worth hunting down
  23. There is a gold plated version on Numista and I recently sold one for face value. It appeared to be gold plated silver but ended up testing as gold plated copper, which is what Numista stated. It's made by one of those mints/sellers that make millions of "commermoratives" and markets them to old age men for £100's more than their intrinsic value, but having said that, many of them are decent coins and well made and can be picked up for a bargain £5 or less on the secondary market
