Hi, new stacker here asking for help. After checking my savings account and getting 0.8APR Gross over a year I decided to invest roughly 3 grand into PM. I am torn between silver and gold currently, silver having a very big premium and VAT on top, gold just tiny quantity to play with :) I need to pick your brains experienced stackers, Imagine you have 3k to spend right now, how would you invest it and where would you buy from.

I am not looking for a quick buck, I feel that  the way the FIAT currency is going I just want to have something valuable in case SHTF. Silver seems to be undervalued, new generation of silver batteries is coming to replace the Lithium ones so my gut is telling me go all silver. Sovereignsteve reckons sovereings :) I spent last months reading every possible article, browsed numerous forums, looked at many silver and gold selling websites. Tomorrow I will get my interest and money will be available, still undecided ..

I also also vote gold/sovereigns, my personal preference is 999 gold coins, although with that amount I would get 7 or 8 sovereigns and 1 or 2 tubes of britannia's and use the left over fiat to stock up on the food cupboard or a new winter jacket or new boots.

I also vote for HGM (HGM = hattongardenmetals.com, one of the forum go-to buyer/seller). Also keep an eye pre-owned section on Atkinsons Bullion. Get gold/silver from recommended dealers for now or familiarise yourself on the forum to source some gold/silver from here.

I've bought from STG (silver-to-go) and HGM. My next purchase will probably from Goldsilver.be or Atkinsons.

E-bay? hmmm not really yet... yes there are good sellers on e-bay but you really need to familiarize yourself who the good and bad ones are and that might take some time. You don't want to buy from a dodgy seller especially if you're ready to pull the trigger. So E-bay is a no-go-zone' for you for now.

Your hunch is correct for gettting gold and yes silver is also 'undervalued' in the long-term, (Having said that,  you never know what can happen).

I throw another in the mix to consider; If you are in it for the long-term, you should consider the 1/4oz gold Queen Beast or perhaps a full 1oz, this is a brand new release from the Royal Mint. You can find various discussions on it on the forum. I personally think it's a must-have as it's a 1st coin of a series. I think you should not miss this boat and it would be perfect start for your stack. (That's just my opinion) :)

Welcome to the forum! :)

EDIT: Also check-out this post from made by Chris

I maybe a Silver Pirate but i would advice sovereigns all day long, Easy to store easy to sell.I buy silver because i can't save for sovereigns i get itchy buy it fingers, and only buy Sovereigns when i have a lump sum in my hand from Birthday's,Xmas  or selling something.

As you have a lump sum i would definatly buy sovereigns and the lads are right, HGM is the best deal i know off dont be in a hurry, stacking is not a race.slowly slowly year of the monkey.

It doesn't matter whether you are selling tomorrow or in ten years.  You should still have a look at how easy it is to sell what you plan to buy and what you may gain or lose.

I suppose the two polarising examples would be:

i) If you are buying collectable coins what could they be worth when you come to sell.  This is somewhat speculative but if you look at coins sold on eBay which were minted a few years ago you can get an idea (remember to minus fees).

ii) If you are buying just for weight at as close to spot as possible then you should look at how eBay sales perform and also what percentage dealers will offer.

Welcome to the forum and a very interesting first post. I'm in a similar position to you and decided to move some of my money into PM's. Spent my first few weeks buying anything that came up at a low enough premium and now have around 80oz silver. It's a complete mixture (bars, coins, rounds) and I may start fine tuning the contents as I get some direction going. I have been keeping an eye on gold but want to do that for a little longer before I start to buy the odd piece. Personally I feel a mixture of gold and silver is the place to be. Gold for the predictability and silver for thr longer term speculation.

For simplicity and the minimal stress, go all in on sovereigns. Hatton Garden Metals are 2% over spot

Put the them away and forget about them, add another full of half soverign as and when spare cash allows

If or when you come to cash them in you'll get back 97% to 100% of gold spot in most cases, selling back to them or other reliables like Atkinsons, Chard or even via the forum here :)

I only buy bars now 1kg silver and 1oz min gold bars. I buy if i find close to spot and just putting them away to forget about them.

I love the sovereigns but i don't have enough knowledge to know what ones to buy?

why do you need to know? your strategy with silver is buy close to spot for stacking. why not just do the same with random sovs?

you may buy one that turns out to be worth a lot more:)

Oh ok? i always felt scared of buying the wrong thing lol

So just buy them as close to spot then? No matter what age?

I dont have any coin books, i have never googled any year sovereign I own, I don't use a jewellers loupe when buying, i couldn't tell you the difference between EF VF and UNC, have got ex mounted sovereigns locally for 1% under spot to save him sending them to melt.

It is the cheapest way to buy gold for me, i think sovereigns tick the most boxes for why you should

Should the fecal matter ever hit the rotatory oscillator these will be most trusted store of value given their price point and known history as the oldest bullion coin in history

If I had 3K to spend as of right now I would buy 2K worth of silver from Goldsilver in Belgium and 1k of Sovs from Hatton Garden Metals.  My reasoning being for now you are getting the VAT reduction on silver from Europe, once / if Brexit ever happens this will stop.  The gold you can add to over time, you can buy a sov or half sov every other month and slowly build your gold up as it's VAT free.

Decisions, decisions, decisions ..:D

I am still undecided, I kinda like the idea of 50x 2 oz silver Queens Beast 2016 (cca 2 grand from goldsilver.be) and rest in gold Sovs from HGM. Majority of you says gold though :-)

I think 50 Queens Beasts sounds like an awesome idea.

Stacker since 2013

To be fair, neither do any of us.

There is no need to restrict yourself to buying a certain type.  If you see a deal or value in something then snap it up.
