2023 Gold Sovereign

Recommended Posts

The 2023 Sovereign will almost certainly not be a normal Sovereign.

The RM will mark HM’s 70th Coronation Anniversary in some way.

Since they did a special reverse this year, I assume they won’t go all out again for next year, so my guess (like some others on here have said) is a privy mark. It’s low effort and they’ve done it before. Perhaps a Crown with a 70 similar to what they did in 2018 for the 65th Coronation Anniversary.

If the RM does put at "70" privy mark on the 2023 sovereign, presumably this will hit the premiums on the 2018 sovereign due to the similarity of design - after all, how special would the 65th anniversay of the Coronation then be?

And besides, the RM will probably produce the sovereign with a "70" privy mark on the proof, SOTD, and the piedfort versions, and maybe a bullion sovereign without the privy mark.

That’s true. Pairing up the 65 and 70 privy sovs would be a curiosity for sure.

Well, they do have a pool of designs to draw on if they don’t fancy splashing out on a new one / privy mark…🤔

The RM has traditionally done special reverses for the Accession Anniversaries (2002, 2012 and 2022) and not for the Coronation ones (2003, 2013).

But you never know. 😏

I’ve asked the RM for a reverse frosted sovereign, you can blame bmr if they do one😂

A new obverse would be great like the 2016 butler for example.

I have a theory that they may do a special obverse in 2024 for when HM becomes the longest reigning living monarch (knocks on wood).

That would match up with the 2016 James Butler special obverse.
