So I bought my first full tube of Britannias....

I was curious to know if the tubes they come in are suitable for long term storage (decades)?  Secondly I was thinking about putting a small fireproof safe in the loft and was wondering if that was a good idea or would there be problems with temperature in there?

Hi, believe the 2017 anniversary Brits are in caps but not got any. Safe to store in tubes if not but maybe check there's no poly packing in the tube etc as fouls taint coins. It's always a gamble with some silver due to dreaded milk spots. Pandas and Perth mint stuff appear to be best for avoiding this and give a decent return over the mid to long term.

These are the non- anniversary coins so no caps.  Though they are cheap bullion in 20 years time I suspect I could flog them well above spot so want to keep them in good condition.

Anyone else add to the safe being ok in a loft for long term storage?

In summer a typical loft can get to about 50 degrees C ( if not 50C then 40C+ ) unless you live in Scotland.
Your fire safe may protect the contents a bit from this temperature depending on how it is insulated.
I would not trust the polythene (?) coin tubes to not leech out some chemical or substance that could affect the coins over years of storage.
Short term storage say 6 months I wouldn't be concerned.
Some plastics are suitable for elevated temperatures ( dishwasher safe ) but coin tubes ???
Just found some rubber bands in a drawer that have literally dissolved over the years leaving permanent stains on a book cover.

2017 anniversary Britannias are in capsules.

In my case I have only one 2017 20th anniversary for collecting purposes. I only order big quantities for bargains&hoarding.

I think it's not worth the premium you pay, and in case of a quick sale of a big ammount you'll get the spot price and lose that extra 1€-2€ you paid

Cheers guys, so I need to ditch the plastic tube at some point.  @Kman I have faith in years to come they will be worth more than spot as collectors will always want to backdate.  Look at the prices that 10 and 20 year old brits are selling for on Ebay.  Not massive margins but you would want your head examined not to sell at those prices rather than spot (unless you wanted a quick sale).

I live in the North East so its not too bad most of the time.  I cant see 50C + temps being a problem really given Silvers melting point.  I was more concerned with humidity but I've also been toying around with the idea of buying a shrink wrap machine and using mylar to wrap coins ( I was going to wrap tubes but that's now looking unlikely).

I'm a collector and I like to backdate! I will pay 2-3% over spot for a coin to complete my collection.

oops..sorry! I though this was the gold forum :P

Hang on... I thought people kept their stacks in tubes long term?  And I've just brought a tube to target filling and for loose coins without capsules.

There's different plastics out there, while I can see PVC would be bad (if you can smell it has to be reactive), polyethylene and polypropylene are pretty solid, stable plastic as i gather.  After all, all those caps are made from something (just what plastic I haven't worked out, anyone know?).  Mylar is a form of PET, which in that form I wouldn't trust too long term (used in plastic bottles, can leach and allow through some molecules)
