  1. Is it definitely confirmed that the BU Memorial 5 sovereign piece is a matte finish? I agree that it will be a great complement to the Platinum Jubilee BU five sovereign piece, but personally I think these coins work better in non-matte finish. Here are mine:
  2. ^^^ I wouidn't choose either, but I suspect the answer is probably the piedfort. Personally I would rather 'just' have the full sovereign than either of these.
  3. I prefer the Memorial reverse of the two designs, its ornateness reminds me a little of the half crowns of 1825-29 and I love that design. Here's my 1829, perhaps you'll see what I mean:
  4. ^^^ It would be fantastic if King Charles said that he identified as non-binary and insisted that she be addressed as Philippa (based on the first of his/her middle names) on weekdays beginning with T.
  5. The last time there was a King wearing a crown on UK coinage was... in the 17th century. And the last time there was a King even wearing a laurel wreath on UK coinage was in the 1820s. So Charles is merely keeping with 'recent' tradition 🙂
  6. I've just ordered the BU five sovereign piece. It's a lot of money that I wasn't expecting to spend, but... I think it's a superb coin and will sit well in my collection. Bread and water for most of 2023 for me I suspect, apart from picking up the bullion sovereign and double sovereign of this design if they release it in those sizes for bullion.
  7. Let's hope so. I would sell units in my Pt ETF holding if the price went up by another 20% or so, I think.
  8. I'd pay £133 for that one all day long!
  9. I saw a fairly reasonable and quite well priced second bust 1723 shilling for sale recently -about £65 from memory, the seller didn't seem to have realised that it was a second bust coin.
  10. Very nice. I was going to say the 1723 shilling was a nice example and probably your most expensive, and the 1834 shilling is also a nice example. I have a similar collection to yours - I have most of different types of shillings going back to Charles II, certainly one of each monarch and I think all the different obverses and reverses once you get to George III onwards, plus one of almost every type of florin and halfcrown from 1849 and 1816 respectively. I've avoided the crowns though! Mine are in a selection of grades and some of them are rare dates, but none of them is high grade and rare date! Keep enjoying finding your next ones. Personally I would keep your 1679 halfcrown and consider finding just one coin (either shilling or half crown) from James II, William & Mary, William III and Anne - so that you have a collection of monarchs back to the Restoration.
  11. Today I want to show these three Brilliant Uncirculated Five Sovereign Pieces. 2017, 2018 and 2022. I love these coins.
  12. Today I received some 10 oz bar capsules from @BullionBuyerUK (many thanks) and now my 10 oz Una bar joins its sister Britannia in a nice snug-fitting capsule. The first photo below is my entire collection of seven bars: 22 oz of silver, 2 oz of gold and 1 oz of platinum. I really like all of them, but the big Una is a stunner.
  13. I think its sheer ubiquity has diminished my interest in its design! I like quite a few of the commemorative designs - the Magna Carta and the Rio Handover are possibly my favourites but I also like the Army coin from the First World War series, and the London Underground Train coin - among others!
  14. My advice to you would be to keep it simple and just stack the raw gold coins at low premiums versus spot. My advice would perhaps differ if you were a collector, but even as a collector I think it depends on (a) the particular coins in question and (b) your own personal aesthetic preferences. Good luck either way.
  15. Regardless of my pedantry above, I would be quite interested in a set of restrike £2 coins that covered all variants of the 2002 Commonwealth Games (4 coins), both the 2008 Olympics coins (1908 anniversary and Beijing handover), and the 2012 handover to Rio coin. That would indeed be a magnificent seven.
  16. Interesting that the RM seems to think that the £2 coin is only 25 years old. This applies to the bimetallic £2 coins, but not to the decimal circulating currency £2 coins (started in 1986 with the Commonwealth Games coins) and from 1823 or even 1820 if you include the £2 gold coins.
  17. I've posted this photo before, but on the theme of dragons - I think most of these designs are pretty good. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Tudor Beasts coin designs look like for the two coins in the series that will feature a dragon. I think the QB dragon is fab, and I love the 2018 Two Dragons design too.
  18. @BullionBuyerUK - did you manage to order any of the 10 oz silver bar capsules in the end, or will that become a separate order?
  19. Looks very nice in the pictures, and in my opinion it doesn't look as if has been cleaned. Hard to know sometimes until you have the coin in hand. These coins are nice pieces of history; the last (easily affordable) early milled silver shilling. One of these, and an 1816 new coinage George III shilling would make a nice pair of shillings in a collection. Decent examples of both coins are quite easy to find for reasonable money, although neither coin is going to increase massively in value. Just enjoy being their custodian for a while.
  20. That looks very nice - it's better than the one I have. Mine is VF. I recognise the website and the coin - the price is about right I would say, possibly a bit on the high side but it's a very decent coin and a really nice thing to have in hand. They are quite common though.
  21. Lovely collection of Sixpences. Apart from the stunning Charles I Briot's coin and Charles II specimen, I particularly like your Edward VI coin. And your 1703 Vigo and your 1821 garnished shield... Keep going!
