Lovely and very rare coin received today- a lucky early and what turned out to be a very much overlooked Sunday morning eBay auction win 😃 Orphaned from an extremely rare 1923 Proof South Africa Set- a lovely chocolate coloured Bronze Penny, nicely toned, a nice Plain edge and just about as struck. A Wonderful coin 👍

A nice 2nd Coin Cabinet arrival that solves a storage/ display problem. The Cabinet has a drawer for coin paraphernalia, the remainder of the them fitted out with Inserts that accept Crowns, which was its intended purpose. As a nice bonus, the drawers are also deep enough to hold 10 Slabs per drawer 😃 and my Peter Nichols Cabinet with my historic Silver sits nicely up on top 👍

Not sure- but they are sold and shipped in tubes/ monster boxes of coins. I’m guessing dealers initially buy them from the respective Mint’s this way, as well as fortunate private individuals. I’ve bought new 1oz Oriental Britannias from Atkinsons previously and they came supplied in flips- From memory, the capsules to fit them were 50p each- the margins must be extremely tight 🙄

Like you say, a fortunate position- I have heard many complaints about stacking and storing Silver- but none about storing Sovereigns. I guess if you are storing them in a chargeable by volume safety deposit box, and you wish to keep costs down, then Tubes will be fine- if they are being stacked and stored in tubes, then once they are in them and in the storage/ hiding place then they are not going to move about and therefore, potential damage will be negligible 👍 I guess not so if you occasionally take the tubes out and shake them about gleefully and with joy, a couple of tubes in each hand like a pair of maracas- to your favourite musical beat- then tubes would be a problem 😉 Given that you have cited Lawrence, then you will know already that dinged and battered ‘grade C’ or ‘Best Value’ Sovereigns are worth far less than the ‘minty’ variety. I would say you could get a fair few tubes of Sovereigns- x25 in a tube in a shoe box size space. But, if you didn’t want them clanging together in tubes then the best of both worlds perhaps, could be to insert each Sovereign into a 2”x2” Saflip, which I believe offer ‘museum grade’ protection and then put them in the Red rigid cardboard Saflip rectangular boxes- which will hold around 100 Sovereigns- and then pop the Saflip boxes in a man-sized shoebox- a Dr Martens Shoebox will hold 10x Saflip boxes- 1,000 Sovereigns per shoebox. By using tubes or Saflips you could take the opportunity whilst decanting them from the capsules to then reappraise your stack, and sell any Sovereigns that might have larger premium over Spot- and replace with lesser Sovs and alongside, selling any Royal Mint Capsules you have for say a fiver a pop- you might gather enough cash for another Sovereign or two. Win- Win- Win 😃

Following on with my Pre- Decimal Crown collection (1820 through to 1960) and whilst I do some reading and get a better understanding of Crown issues prior to George III, I have decided to move forward with Decimal issued Crowns (or £5’s). My aim is to collect all the modern Commemorative Royal issues- to date- and in as many formats as possible- Piedfort, Silver Proof, Proof FDC & Base Metal. By my reckoning there have been 39 different Monarchy themed Crown issues since 1972- this should keep me busy for a while, so if you don’t here from me, that’s what I’m up to 😂 These arrivals came over the last several days. With thanks to @Richym99 for the eight Piedforts and the freebie display case was appreciated (I’ll need it!). And thank you @PapaLazarou for the Crowns. A couple more were eBay pick ups. Piedforts Crowns- Silver Proof & Base metal Also nice to get together all 6 of Her Majesty’s Portraits in the Crown sized coin.

Thanks@Stuntman for giving me the nudge to get cracking with the Crowns. Agreed on the 1821, it’s a lovely Crown. Yes, the 1972 and 1977 are Proof and the 1960 Prooflike (from Polished dies). Logically, I think you’re right going further back would be the next step but I’ll have to do some reading first. A Cromwell would be the holy grail. There’s quite a bit of noise surrounding the Gothic Crown currently and a good chance of being rinsed pursuing one, it might be worth waiting until the fuss has died somewhat?

I remember a wise man telling me that Silver should only be for collecting 😉

To update this thread, in terms of @Stuntman's suggestions of what Crowns to collect. I clearly haven't the resources to purchase an example of a William IV Crown, and the Victoria Gothic Crown is one that I will need to dig deep for at some point in the future. I haven't decided if I want to backdate further, but I have started to piece together modern Crowns in terms of Coronation Anniversary and Jubilee issues. Its been quite satisfying (and expensive) getting this far. I have essentially bought the best within my budget- the minimum grade being EF/ GEF- but all with nice eye appeal and there are some Uncirculated Grades, including some lovely Proofs- 1902 Matte; 1927 Wreath; 1951, 1972 & 1977. I have also 'duplicated' the 1937 in terms of having the Proof and an Uncirculated example. I might well do this with other year dates. The 1820 George III and the 1821 George IV along with the 1902 Edward VII Matte Proof, the 1927 George V Wreath and the 1960 Elizabeth II Prooflike are my top 5.
