Hi All,
Just to give an update for this. I did send an email letting them know of the fakes and asked for some advice on what happens next.
A gent from the auction house just phoned me to apologise and have arranged for some money to be sent back to me.
All in I am very happy with how they have dealt with it.

Auction house is in Norfolk, a place called Horners. They are not local to me and bidding was done online.

Hi.
For testing silver you don't need a stone. You need only a solution containing Potassium Dichromate with concentrated Nitric acid. Will show you accurately if your items are silver or not, by colour of reaction. Just need to apply a tiny drop of solution on metal and wait to "read" the colour.
Attention:
1. A silver plated item can show red (light or dark) at beginning, but waiting a little more the silver will be consumed by acid and will show after the base metal's colour. If unsure, scratch deeply the material on a hidden side/area and apply a tiny drop of solution.
2. The acid is very corrosive, so be careful. Rinse with plenty of water your objects after testing.
3. If the item is silver, will remain a white stain, doesn't matter the silver purity. If it is a base metal (zinc, copper, brass, etc), the stain will be dark (grey, brown or whatever). Lead, tin or stainless steel will be unaffected.
The solution is cheap and good on Ebay. I have bought several times from this seller with good results:
