What a great article. Thanks for pointing me at that @MonkeysUncle.
I think we'll all continue to interpret this guidance in our own ways:  "...a small allocation of British gold Sovereigns can be a useful diversification in an investment portfolio."
Also, I've never bought precious metals from there, but I'm pretty sure I used to drink in the Knuckle Dragger Central.
    Cheers.

Thanks to @ST1986 and @Sh97if for some of today's additions to my stack.
The 2012 continues my one-man vendetta against the Pistrucci sovereign (which will get me banned from the forum at some point I'm sure).
And the 10oz bars have helped me realise a life-long dream of owning PMs that look like it does in the movies!

I recently read George Orwell's "Keep The Aspidistra Flying" in which the main character frequently laments the shame of paying for anything in those tiny threepence coins. The ambitious but starving artist usually throws them away rather than have the gall of passing them off as currency!

@MaxeBaumann here are the 6 together, the detail in these coins is just outstanding, I can only imagine what @BackyardBullion gold ones look like 👍 (please excuse the foam ring on the last one 🤣 I will get some better caps soon)

Yes, after the exciting feeling passed of unboxing the piece and then reading your comments I came to my senses and your explanations made sense to me @GBStacking@FourNinesFine. The COA has less of an impact if the actual proof isn't actually what it's meant to be...a proof. It was sent back the same day 🙄.

Thank you again!🙂 (apologise for being such a novice)

    Hey, welcome.
I'm no collector of proofs, but looking at the image, that ding above the 'E' is pretty significant. My only advice would be to remember that you're collecting coins, not certificates. I appreciate it's nice to have lower numberred COAs but there's always a chance the new one could have its own novelty value... running numbers (123) or repeating digits (222) etc.
But even if not, I'm still iinclined to agree with what @GBStacking said above. I'd be prioritising the coin over the paper.
    Good luck with your collecting.

As a numismatist, I wouldn't say buy the best coin you can, buy the coin you like - so long as the price is right and fair.
Sometimes there's more rewards to be had from buying a beautifully toned EF coin than a PF70. On technical grounds the PF70 is superior, but it might not have the soul of the EF.
As for your purchasing conundrum, I'd echo the sentiments of all those who have posted before me. A bigger price tag doesn't mean a better coin, it just makes the potential future buyers a smaller pool to sell to.

Great advice from everyone - thank you.
I don't hear anyone say buy it :-)
Often I do hear pundits say "buy the best coin you can" - but I guess that tends to be in the numismatic areana.
Ok I'll stick to the 1oz Coronation if I can get one and consider my choices from there. I'll report back.
Again thank you to eveyone who spent time to comment.

I've seen folks have real trouble shifting big gold proofs here on TSF on more than one occasion.  Not many folks have a spare £15,000 to throw about on a single coin, so they're prone to liquidity problems.  Most proof coins, even from the RM, don't hold their value and make a poor investment.  You will quite probably take a bath of £5,000 or more on one of the 5oz proofs if you try to re-sell it.  IMO these are bad mojo.
You would be far better off buying Brits or Sovs - and don't for the love of god buy them from the Royal Mint web site either.  Shop around the major bullion dealers for the best price -  as a starting point, for Brits try HGM, Chards, Tavex, Bairds or Atkinsons, and for Sovs try Bairds, HGM or Blundell's.  You could also try the secondary market - here on TSF or various FB groups, but avoid Ebay as the prices will be too high.
If you're going to get into sovereigns, you should do your homework.  At a minimum, get a copy of the Marsh book The Gold Sovereign.  Other useful books include Spink's Coins of England and the United Kingom, and Allen's Grading British Coins.
