Oh man, the latest event in this nightmare adventure that's been going on since 14 October is just INCREDIBLE.... To recap: 14 Oct: My "Year of the Pig" coin from the Trial of the Pyx turns out to be missing from its sealed brochure. After half an hour on the phone, I find it loose, wedged in the corner of the cardboard mailer envelope it arrived in, but there's still a tangible problem: The coin has been installed wrong-face-up in its tamper-evident packaging! 20 Oct: Yes, 6 days later, RM finally reply to my email to say they can't offer me a replacement so I can only return it for a refund. 20 Oct: I ask them to resolve it properly, i.e. by repackaging the coin. I'm disappointed that it arrived the wrong way round in the first place, let alone having to wait nearly a week for a response that doesn't actually solve the problem. 27 Oct: A full week later, I'm eventually told they can indeed repackage the coin. Yay! I return the coin using a supplied pre-paid label and mark it for the attention of an individual as instructed. 8 Nov: I get another email confirming that my coin has been received and passed onto the relevant department to be re-packaged and sent back to me. I was told I would get a confirmation email when it has been re-dispatched. And today: 22 Nov: The coin arrived out of the blue, with no email confirmation of dispatch. Guess what? It's still the wrong way up! Worse still, there is a distinctive mark on the tamper-evident packaging that matches the one on the detailed photos I took before returning it. This shows they haven't accidentally packaged it the wrong way up again, rather they have literally done nothing to it at all! They have just kept my coin for a few weeks and returned it in the exact same packaging it was in when I sent it to them. What should I do now?! This is so frustrating and it's taken up hours of my time and I am firmly back at square one again.

I didn't say it was your problem? I was just explaining the likely cause of those discrepancies (one of them told me his life story while I was trying to get an account problem sorted out! )

I think it's reasonable to assume that the front-end customer service people don't really know what's going on most of the time, and certainly don't have access to certain information. A lot of them are just normal people who needed a job - some of them haven't been in the job that long, and not all of them will even have any true interest in or knowledge of the stuff their employer sells to pay their wages.

What happens to the mintage figures if they make new replacements?

Are proof Sovereign sets CGT-exempt years down the line? The individual coins within are legal tender, but the box obviously isn't and that presumably accounts for some of the set's value.

Thanks for the news! Are we expecting only double, full and half sovereigns to be available as bullion?

Are you sure the capsule is chipped? Having had a closer look at mine, I think they're injection moulded on a frame and that bit looks like where the lid would have been broken off or cut from the sprue. All of my capsules have slightly rough rectangular areas on the side like that, as that's where the gate is that would allow the material to flow into it. As the material is quite brittle, you'd expect to see white colouring in those areas and it's even visible from the front in some cases (no pun intended).

Interesting formats! I haven't seen either of those before - where did you get them from?

My main motivation was just having a perfect (or close to perfect) set of five. I'm not bothered enough to return the single full sovereign although I probably could do. Problem sorted, easy life!

On very close inspection, the only coin in my 5-coin set that has a noticeable imperfection is, thankfully, the regular full sovereign. So rather than faffing about with returning the whole set, I have swapped it with the perfect sovereign I received a few days earlier!

I would have completely agreed until I got my first proof sovereign this week - they really do have a level of detail that can't be appreciated with the naked eye imho!

Just typical, after going to the effort of setting up a tripod, camera, lights etc. to capture any problems at the point of unboxing, my 5-coin set turned out to be perfect! (at least to the naked eye, that is.... I will have a closer look with a million dollar electron microscope after all the other things people have pointed out) Somewhat miffed at having a COA number in the mid-range considering I must have been one of the first people here to actually order it, but by lucky coincidence it's still a rather special number to me!

Nah, get a replacement; and insist that it's packaged better, too. Whenever I've posted ridiculously expensive pieces of paper, where even the slightest crease would obviously be unacceptable, I put them in a cardboard-backed envelope, and then package that in a cardboard box with void fill. The additional postage cost is negligible and the additional bulk also prevents the postman from damaging it by trying to cram it through a letterbox.

Mine arrived an hour ago and I haven't touched the parcel yet. I'm letting my initial excitement subside a bit so any possible disappointment is less crushing

I still haven't received my repackaged Trial of the Pyx coin (started the process on 14 Oct) so I hope I don't have to go through all this again for a sovereign. Feels like they are too busy making millions by selling new things to bother with providing anything like an acceptable level of customer service for existing orders.

At least if everyone posts similarly detailed photos of the coins they'll be returning, it'll be pretty evident which ones end up being palmed off as replacements!

Gosh, I think I might video my own opening of the package just so there can be no dispute over who or what may have caused any dings.
