Welcome to the forum. Ultimately, only get what you can afford without stretching yourself too much. If your in to gold. I would say you can't go to far wrong with the humble sovereign. If silver is your thing. Watch the premiums, when the VAT gets added it can be such a killer for any potential future profits as you have that extra 20% to contend with.

What's your intention with your stack? Putting money aside for a rainy day/saving? Something to look at and enjoy? Or are you looking to profit?

Going bigger might be tempting with cheaper premiums but they don't sell as easily. 1oz silver coins are very liquid in comparison.

Bars or coins is mostly down to preferences - large markets for both.

Don't worry about VAT on silver if buying on the secondary market. It only ever factors on new purchases from dealers and the peer-to-peer market only trails a few % behind dealer prices.
