closed 1978 Gold Coin

If anyone has a gold coin from 1978 they would like to sell I would be interested in considering a purchase.

I don't want any Brits but I would consider a Krug, a Double Sovereign or something more rare and unusual.

Coin sizes I would consider are 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz or 1oz. Don't want anything smaller than a 1/4 oz really.

If anyone has any suggestions then please let me know.

Not sure there is a 1978 double sovereign.

It’s just as well you don’t want any Brits, as they didn’t start until 1987. 😊

Also, Brits are great!

Lol I do like Brits, I have a lot of silver Brits and some 1/10 gold Brits.

It's just I'm after something that's out of the ordinary. I wasn't aware Brits began in 1987, you learn something new everyday lol 😆

Yeah I've just been reading the Chards blog actually, the sovereign date year checker section is very helpful and confirms which years the sovereigns were or were not issued 👍

It is an interesting coin now on ebay and from pictures look good for me. Also, being unusual, the chances to be a fake are very low.

It is double sovereign specifications, so .917 / 22ct, 15.97g, 28.4mm diameter. See https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24489.html.

It is at auction with starting price £750 plus £7.65 shipping. Send a very polite message to mister/madam seller and try a direct offer of £700-£725, maybe he will accept.

I can not add a proper link from Ebay, my tablet is playing games with me, maybe you can attach a link, but the title is

1978 $1000 Hong Kong Horse Gold Coin.

Thanks for the post @stefffana I appreciate your time in looking. I have already seen this coin and discounted it as a possibility - I just don't like it.

I've seen some lovely Spanish, Jamaican and other European coins including some from the former Yugoslavia. These are all beautiful coins but the asking prices are way crazy for the amount of gold they contain.

I think after looking for the last few days a Krug would be my best option for a gold coin that I find pleasing to the eye which also isn't gona cost me a premium way over spot price.

Thanks @stefffana I will take a look. As for budget, that depends on the size coin. I have some money coming from my family for birthday and if I asked I could also get Xmas money early, but it would have to be for the right coin 😁

For a beautiful and not very usual coin with your birth year, you can pay an extra 30-%50% if you really like it, because for you will be a keeper, not a flipper.

Your children will sell it after you will disappear.🤗

If you're going down the sovereign route for 1978 you should see this 2nd portrait of Liz by Arnold Machin 👍🏼 The usual George on his horse slaying the dragon on tails side
