I have been offered an 1862 shield sovereign with R over E and not sure what to offer for it?

Would this be considered a F grade or could it be VF?

Any advice appreciated :D

I am no expert but would consider that to be VF. I am very fussy and would love that in my collection.

London coins auction results might give you an idea on this variety, there are a few examples in the list in this link: https://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&searchterm=Sovereign+1862+E+Over+R&searchtype=1

I've also seen a couple pass through eBay recently with the variety not listed in the description, so I guess the seller didn't recognise the full potential. They both sold for less than £500 but, as you know, condition affects the price.

May be @Allgoldcoins might help, he has a very useful website with a guide to the errors and varieties from this era: https://www.allgoldcoins.co.uk/pages/18-the-queen-victoria-shield-reverse-sovereign-1860-74-london
