Gloves to handle coins and storing a bar of silver

I'm totally new to this and was just wondering which are the best gloves to wear when handling silver or gold coins and bars?

Also, am I right in thinking that storing coins in those transparent plastic capsules are the best way to store them?

If I was to buy a bar of silver, are there any special sort of storage bags I should be keeping them?

If buying something like an once of PAMP gold, should I leave the packaging sealed in storage?

Any tips re: storage temperature / avoid damp etc greatly appreciated. I'm intending to keep the coins and bar for many, many years so would like to make every effort possible to keep them in the best condition.

I'm new also but I believe 100% cotton gloves are recommended( watching one of @BackyardBullion) videos from Edinburgh Assay office it looked like both he and the assay master were wearing black latex gloves so maybe they are suitable also.

If your coins are loose I.e. not in tubes designed for 20 plus coins supplied by for example the Royal Mint then "Airtite" Capsules are best. I've just taken delivery of 30 of these from @morezone ( make sure you check you get the correct size as they vary widely )

Good question re the bars storage as I've also got a few of these one ouncers that I didn't think about and looking at photos online you can see many of these in plastic cases.

Hope this helps a bit.

Many thanks Bluegeo, I much appreciate your advice. The 100% cotton or black latex gloves sound a good idea. For some reason, I always pictured snooker referee's gloves when handling coins!

The "Airtite" capsules sound good, I was looking at the capsules on Bleyer's website earlier, hopefully they will be suitable and their website very clearly states which size capsules apply to the coins I'm thinking of getting.

I did read something about storing bars in cloth or canvas type bags earlier but I'm not sure which ones would be best.

I'm totally new to this and it's only something I've considered very recently so it's all a learning process at the moment!

I'm sure everyone does these things differently.

I just have a simple pair of white cotton gloves, I only tend to wear them when handling semi-numismatic coins.

My proof coins are in capsules or slabs, so I never have a chance to handle them.

All the rest I'm happy to fondle or accidently drop on the floor, which I'm really good at doing with sovereigns 😀

Capsule your best coins but don't bother with bullion.

Like Gremlins, coins don't like direct sunlight or water for prolonged periods, I find silver tones quite easily, some people don't mind toned silver others do.

I think it's PVC you need to steer clear of when purchasing bags for your coins, as it sticks to them over time.

Silica gel sachets and toning strips are common things people throw in with their coins.

Keeping the PAMP bars in the OMP (original mint packaging) is a good idea for resale value.

No worries MJ Compare the prices you're being quoted by Bleyers as @morezone ( a member of this forum) will likely give you a better price.

This forum is an excellent way to learn as well as doing your own research and comparisons.

Good luck mate!

Many thanks for all the information and the links to previous posts.

If I was to buy a silver bar that came in clear plastic packaging, am I best to keep it in the original packaging and then store it in a Town Talk bag with some anti-tarnish strips or I should I take the silver out of the original packaging and then place it in the Town Talk bag?

Thanks again

Keep in packaging I'd imagine, stick a silica pouch or tarnish strip in the bag with it 👍

Many thanks for all the replies re: handling silver and gold coins - I'll invest in some of those Nitrile gloves to handle them.

This might sound a silly question but when storing gold coins such as Sovereigns, do they also need to be stored with a silica pouch or tarnish strip or will just storing gold coins in capsules be ok?
