Hello,

Until now, I have never graded my coins, and I try to figure out what makes a "perfect 70" . So I propose for those interested, who are used to grade their coins to vote and comment. I have selected this Una as an example which seems to me to have flaws that would seem crippling to get a 70, but may be I am wrong. Your advices are welcome

@ChrisSilver,  Hello, I wanted to create this poll in the general precious metals section as this is imore adequate with grading in general, but I forgot to change the poll to this section when I have submitted it

I didn’t understand sorry. You posted a topic/poll about a coin that is silver, so silver is the correct section. I will leave it here.

The topic is called "Poll : Can you give a grade ?" with a heading to the poll "1. How would you grade this silver Una ?"

So it is about silver. If you want to start a separate topic about how do coin companies grade coins, then that is a different question that can go in the general precious metals section :) as your poll here is clearly a poll about a silver coin and members will reply with their viewpoint on what this coin in question should be graded.

Alternatively if you were willing to change the topic title so it’s more a general topic title that is inciting further general discussion e.g. “How do you grade a coin?” or “Can you grade a coin?” then it would be a good topic for the general precious metals section. Would you be willing to change the title and I can move the topic over, would that work for you? (Then I can also tidy up this topic and remove these posts) :)

Thank you for those who took the time to vote.  In fact this coin is already graded and I wanted to know your perception about what we could consider as a good or bad grade. I wanted of course to get an objective vote and I have intentionaly hidden  the graded coin. I don't know if 15 votes are enough, but what seems to be unanime is that 88%  of the voters considered  a bad grade for this modern coin (equal or less that PF68). I would also like to know what were the 2 voters's point who  considered it at a PF69 and PF70.

This makes me feel that grading is really subjective and arbitrary and a gamble for those who invest so big maney in such coins

Here is now the original pictures of the coin graded ...PF70 and sold at Heritage Auctions at a record price of 13200 US$ !

Interesting, especially for the bidder who won this auction ! However, it was probably too early in the morning for the specialist who graded this coin !

I've always maintained that graded coins are problematic - i've got a graded proof 69 coin which is flawless (as far as i can see).

I'm convinced that grading companies have quotas and grade accordingly. The difference betweena 68 and 69 and a 69 and 70 are often invisible.

I suppost it's all down to the criteria being used - in this case it would appear that poor frosting was not considered to be an issue 🥴

This was one of those pre-graded first release coins sent to the US market. I personally think a private grading is more accurate, and a privately graded 70 more sought after than these first releases..

My coin was loads better than this one, and although I got a good price for it I wasn't greedy about it. But these Una coins are really stunning masterpieces and I think in the future their value will only increase as a good aging red wine.

I'm not a fan of grading. I disliked it when I first had a non coin item graded well over 20 years ago and I dislike it in all its modern day forms across all the collectable markets. I think its only real value is in authenticating older coins and even that becomes questionable as forgers become better at what they do. It is an entirely subjective practice. I'm sure the best companies such as NGC have very rigorous guidelines and rules, etc but humans understand things and behave subjectively. Your understanding of a set of rules is likely to differ slightly from mine as will be the ways we might apply those rules as individuals. As long as there are individual humans making those decisions this will always be the case.

Edit - While I believe the above to be true and have held that belief as said for over 20 years now I also thought it worth adding that if I believe it would benefit me financially prior to a sale to grade a coin I would have it done. I'm in this game to increase wealth so if thats what the market demanded I would have it done.
