Technically, alcohol is a solution..

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

A friend's late dad used to do this back in the 90s, hiding treasure around the UK and leaving clues for folk to find. There might well be a society or national group who already do this sort of thing.

There was also some very rich chap in the US who supposedly (as it hadn't been found at the time I read about it) buried an absolute fortune of PMs, precious stones etc in a real treasure chest, somewhere in a range of mountains iirc.

He wrote and sold a book about this. I wonder if he hid the treasure before or after the book sold thousands of copies 😉

My missus bought me an Isis puzzle going back a few years ago, where you worked out how to open the puzzle to release a key with a code on it. This was then entered onto their website and you then had to work out the clue where a coin or coins were hidden. Anyone else had one of these?

We could crowd fund for a unique coin, and ship it to one another on the forum until everyone has had it. Post pictures of it with them as well. Brother Hood of Travelling Coins.

I pledge £5 if anyone else wants to match me.

As far as opening the puzzle to get the key out, then registered the code. I think I had to choose a puzzle to enter but somehow lost the key and never carried on. You need the key to open a hidden box that has gold coins inside, which you either send away to be cashed in or you keep them. It was a while back so I may have it slightly wrong but the details are on their website. If they're still running these puzzles then I might be tempted to get another one and see how I get on.

It says competition ends May 2010 😋

 No chance of entering then!

I've just hunted it down and found it in a cupboard. The way to open it is to twist the ball around so certain symbols line up, then depress the centre and it should then twist open to release. I did get this as a present quite a few years ago but not sure exactly when. Shame they're still not going.

Interesting, cheers! A shame it's finished now. Also, fascinating Egyptian theme, that link might interest @augur

I have a wooden puzzle box as a goodbye gift from a friend in Japan. Lovely, item, antique, hand made etc. The problem is I long ago forgot how to open the bliddy thing or what's inside, I'll have to have a look and see if I can find it. I hope it's not as difficult as this:

I've just watched Mr Puzzle solve this on Youtube, how the whatnots did you work it out? :o

(There's a good comment on the vid about how the treasure hunts worked.)

It took me a couple of frustrating days to work out how to open it but it was part of the fun. I tried it upside down, spinning it and shaking it but I've since forgotten how to open it. I might give it a go later but I'm not holding out any hope of achieving success.

Save yourself the trouble and watch Mr Puzzle I reckon! It's not quite at the level of 'has to be completed facing due east during a thunderstorm on a Tuesday wearing a kilt and singing 'My Old Man's a Dustman' but it's close enough for me

The comment about how the treasure hunt worked is cool too, apart from the so'n'so who nicked one of the clues :P
