  1. It could be explained by the strong link by Greece to the sovereign as millions of them were pumped into Greece after the Second World War to prevent economic collapse. There's a great video by the British Numismatic Society here (skip to 17:40 mins for the Greek interest but it's worth listening to the full story):
  2. There are a few different O's or 0's, shapes and sizes. and I honestly don't know which ones match the Marsh entries. Steve Hill tries to explain the differences in the Bentley Collection Auction catalogue here, but I'm not sure which is which still. Got any O's? 😃
  3. Happy new year to all of the silver forum, best wishes for the new year and I hope we break £1800 by the end of 2024! ❤️ Shamon! @HerefordBullyun 😀
  4. I'd be really tempted to leave it as it is, it strengthens the provenance and adds to the character of the coin. 👍
  5. This one's from the Douro and isn't so pristine, I guess seawater damage comes in different stages...... https://www.smallsauctions.com/auction-lot/sea-salvaged-gold-sovereigns-14-visible-subsume_D954C88868
  6. You can see there's a lot of parties that could have a claim to the prize. It wouldn't have been a problem if the British navy had captured the galleon instead of sinking it! 😀
  7. The Columbian government plan on recovering billions from the "holy grail of shipwrecks", the San Jose, a Spanish treasure ship sunk in 1708. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/21/san-jose-shipwreck-recovery-treasure-colombia-spain https://www.cbsnews.com/news/san-jose-shipwreck-colombia-try-to-get-treasures-cargo-worth-billions/

    Famous last words

@Roy don't be bound by physical, you can play the paper markets (especially silver) without limit!
  9. I'll take the last one please. will send you a PM.
  10. Looking at it again I think the die has clashed with the collar. If you look closely I think I can lines running from the curved mark to the outer edge of the die where the collar reeds have scratched the die. See similar example below: This image courtesy of: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?topic_id=339818
  11. It doesn't look like a crack. Could it be a damaged die? It's doesn't look like your regular die clash but could it have stuck a cylindrical object such as a misaligned collar? I'm just speculating though, I honestly don't know.
  12. Yes, I agree. The font is supposed to have a serif, compare it to image a genuine coin below, courtesy of sovereign rarities I don't think yours is genuine ☹️
  13. Anyone have a link for the auction?
  14. I'm looking for a Royal Mint coin capsule to suit a double sovereign. Condition doesn't matter so long as it's functional.
  15. Laurence Chard started a post with lots of info about sovereign metal content:
  16. What do you think @GoldDiggerDave, is this a Roman 1? Expensive shield at £645 if it isn't..... https://www.cambridgeshirecoins.com/products/1846-sovereign-gvf-1
  17. Hard luck and always worth a shot. Unlike Homer Simpson who said “You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.” 😀
  18. It's hard to tell without a good close up photo. Could be something interesting, could be a nick on the coin just before the serif though.
  19. Are you referring to the 1872-M die rotation error? I wish it was mine to re-grade but @Orpster found this gem, he might be able to answer.
  20. Check out the Portuguese taxes. In the UK gold bars are liable for capital gains tax, whereas sovereigns aren't.
