Looking at it again I think the die has clashed with the collar. If you look closely I think I can lines running from the curved mark to the outer edge of the die where the collar reeds have scratched the die. It doesn't look like a crack. Could it be a damaged die? It's doesn't look like your regular die clash but could it have stuck a cylindrical object such as a misaligned collar? I'm just speculating though, I honestly don't know.

It's hard to tell without a good close up photo. Could be something interesting, could be a nick on the coin just before the serif though.

Check out the Portuguese taxes. In the UK gold bars are liable for capital gains tax, whereas sovereigns aren't.
