  1. Charles? Meh. Elizabeth has appeared on other RM coins since her death but sadly not on her memorial sovereign. I take your point though and others who say the reigning Sovereign should be on the obverse (obviously Chaz’s first sov). I think I must still bear him a grudge for making me buy his investiture stamp for a shilling when I was a kid in 1969 and I had to go without comics for a fortnight.
  2. Or the designer spilt his spaghetti on it.
  3. I just love the Tudor Rose design and find it sad that it always appears on the reverse of slabs rather than the front. That’s what happens when you get a special reverse and a special obverse both on the one coin I suppose.
  4. I’d rather sign a pact with the devil than give my personal details to Hattons of London.
  5. So nobody’s seen the King’s new sovereign “in the flesh” yet? Here’s more of the King’s possessions to cast your imagination over.
  6. Did I miss something? RM staff selling naughty selfies as a sideline perhaps?
  7. 193 pages on this thread so far and I confess that I haven’t frequented TSF enough to read them all, but I recall comparisons were made between the slow pick-up rate of sales of the popular 1989 sovereign and the same thing happening with the 2022 memorial sovereign (arriving in 2023, the cheek of it). Although perhaps like the majority of us I didn’t collect coins in 1989, let alone dream of one day owning gold, back then who had the internet? I’d hazard a guess that Royal Mint’s marketing came down to a mailshot to previous customers and adverts in newspapers and magazines, hence the slow pick-up rate of the 1989 sovereign. Nowadays we can access coin websites galore and base our buying decisions not just on coin designs, mintages and affordability etc, but also through valued opinions and feedback from countless coin collectors and dealers (such as @LawrenceChard) on our wonderful Forum. Maybe we shouldn’t compare 1989 sov sales with memorial sov sales? I don’t doubt the 2022 will be popular though, despite the mintages.
  8. A tough year for George. Clearly an uphill battle trying to slay that dragon.
  9. Likewise. There will be a maximum of 1,200 proof quintuples minted but only a maximum of 1,000 Matt/BU quintuples. The Mint still have the rest of this month to re-sell any cancelled 5 box sets on to anyone who originally missed out on the proof quintuples so I think the mintage for those will remain at 1,200. The Matt/BU quintuples on the other hand have a lower mintage regardless than the proofs and only around 75% of them have been sold to date. Don’t get me wrong though, I aspire to buy a graded proof quintuple as and when I can afford one but should I ever want to sell the Matt/BU there should be more prospective buyers who can afford to buy that coin on the secondary market rather than the proof. That makes the Matt version a better investment in my humble opinion. Should I eventually acquire the proof version then that would remain in my collection until death us do part, so I wouldn’t worry about its resale value. Naturally I’d be turning in my grave at the thought of how much my family would sell off my collection for!
  10. Just been checking back on Monday’s posts looking for this one. Despite my disagreement with you over the Potter coins I wanted to say fair play to you. This is still looking like a good call.
  11. Same here. My screenshot tells me this happened at 9.12 which I think was just ahead of the RM server crash. Tried a few times to no avail. Checked this thread and the first post I laid eyes on said uk gold coins were selling these coins. Having recently bought off Mark I went to his website and got the £5 BU which is all I wanted. Just realised on Wednesday night that Mark discounted the £5 BU by £50 compared to the RM price. Happy bunny.
  12. Squeaky bum time. Don’t know why as I’m probably just looking today.
  13. …..BREAKING NEWS….. In an unprecedented step, the Welsh First Minister has just announced that all clocks in Wales (especially SheepStacker’s) are to be turned back by 1 hour tonight for reasons not yet specified. Apple will automatically adjust its own devices as usual. The sole exception to this ruling will be the Royal Mint as I’ve just remembered it’s in Wales too 😁
  14. I’d have an outside bet on the Queen Consort, but she’s more likely to come into play at the Coronation.
  15. Q is faster. Let’s hope the Q will be fast tomorrow.
  16. That thought did quickly cross my mind, but the Platinum Jubilee sovereign was a sell-out. Perhaps they could always strike some more for a 2 box set but I don’t think that would be fair play to everyone who had to pay significantly more for them on the secondary market. I guess we’ll find out soon.
  17. Let’s hope they don’t get bored and start googling naughty things.
  18. They didn’t exist. The Mint seems to like chucking any old sovereign coin in to make up the 2 box sets as it gets rid of old stock. Anyone with other suggestions?
  19. I hope you’re not keeping your coin collection in the wet room !!!
  20. Suggest that to Hattons Of London. They stick the word “sovereign” on the end of a lot of their gold coin releases (presumably to attract unsuspecting first time buyers who think they’re getting Royal Mint sovereigns). They have a Her Majesty’s Graces sovereign series. Maybe the engravers initials are TAT.
  21. I hope it tastes like chocolate 😁
  22. Totally disagree. Your argument should be that the Potter book series has a vast worldwide fan base larger than the amount of people who collect coins. The Potter coins do not transcend anything as the sales figures you quoted prove. What you imply suggests an ignorance of numismatics in my opinion.
  23. So the Harry Potter coins are still not sold out after 3 weeks? That only tells me that the majority of Harry Potter fans prefer books to coins. You cannot make sales comparisons between a novelty coin minted in a blip of time in Royal Mint history and the Sovereign which was introduced in 1489. Would a similar sales scenario be the case in book stores if JK Rowling brought out another Harry Potter book? Absolutely not. My daughter was such an avid Harry Potter book reader that she was annoyed after seeing the first film and seeing what content was cut out of the book. I don’t think she watched many more. She owns 2 first edition books yet when she saw the coins she laughed. Kiddy fodder. That says it all in my opinion.
  24. I wasn’t keen on the first 2022 sov design either and decided not to participate. First impression was it resembled a design on one of the old pound coins. I only revisited it very recently and I changed my mind about the design and took the plunge - albeit with the leftovers, but happy to pay more for a top pop graded coin.
