  1. I think they missed a trick here, and also it's a shame for collectors who had the whole set until this unexpected coin (11th in a series of 10!) arrived. Glad I picked up a few 1ozers in great condition
  2. I had just started out then, so I post only to be corrected It was PCGS as well as NGC. I don't know if and to what extent the error 'proof' certificates from the Mint played a part. But I believe it was the first 'huge' SotD (and certainly still a - if not the - very noteworthy one) they both received for grading. It was and is prooflike, it's stunning (as I'm sure you know) - like many of the subsequent SotDs. The very strange bit came when people questioned/tried to correct them, and then the Mint issued the 'please send back your error certificates for exchange - it's not a Proof'. They both still stuck to their guns for a while with their proof designation. As I've said, someone recently said on here that another (subsequent) SotD was given a PF designation, but I've never seen one or heard of that before.
  3. I can walk it to NGC London to consign myself, but I think you're right Roy. Always worth pondering on and reassessing your collection/pieces from time to time though! A different subject really but I do have a few coins for grading. With all the uncertainty in the world right now though, I am keeping them where they are until steadier days, better safe than sorry atm imo. It's such a stunning coin, and I do love my PCGS holder and all the story that goes with it - the whole bundle. I don't think it'd be the same in a new slab. 69 or 70 doesn't matter to me and it's never leaving my collection anyway Some of us say 'buy the coin and not the holder' often. I've realised now that I don't simply enjoy my coins often enough. I am not grateful enough for what I have. I shall aim to both enjoy them and be appreciative more
  4. There have been quite a few now, but not too many to spend a day or two researching which are which, what the differences are, and which ones you think are key (or may be key) in future. Also, of course, which ones might be a good investment going forward (you will get differing opinions on this)! Any more questions please do ask Very nice indeed but @Roy has just pipped you with his 'First Releases' designation! Lol, I wonder how many actually took up the offer - maybe those are the extremely rare and desirable ones! Mine is a PCGS PF69 which would easily cross at 70, but then I'd lose the PF. However if it's one of only a handful in an MS (and I still have the error cert)...🤔
  5. Also, the two main grading companies (NGC and PCGS) wrongly graded the 2017 SotD as a PF and not an MS (the quality can be very similar, which is why I personally believe the Mint switched to Matte SotDs, to differentiate). The Mint actually sent out incorrect CoAs with the 2017s saying they were Proof, a big mistake! Some people sent their graded coins back, to be reholdered as MS and not PF, and exchanged their CoAs with the Mint. Others like me have kept the 'error' CoAs and the coins graded as PF. So you may see a 2017 graded as PF, or even (I guess) people trying to sell as one without explaining the history. I have not seen one myself but recently on here someone posted that another SotD had been wrongly graded as PF. All SotDs should be classed as MS, even if many of us think they are almost as good as, or even as good as, proofs.
  6. I tend to send them back when they haven't got enough horsemeat in them
  7. The Sovereign is and always will be gold (whatever other ridiculous gimmicks they can come up with - some of which 'work', some of which don't - both of course, to some extent, depending on your point of view). There wasn't one in silver for the Silver Jubilee, there won't be a platinum one next year. Look to the other Jubilee coins (like this year) for different variations.
  8. So...back to the Sovs please folks..?
  9. Andrew might turn state's evidence on the three adults in front of him, and become Regent
  10. That's a very interesting topic in itself, and will be a very big debate on here when the time comes! No, she was very popular indeed, especially after her service during the war. The biggest sales of televisions ever in the UK were for the coronation. Interestingly, she hasn't fulfilled her Coronation Oath to uphold The Bible. In theory, if the monarchy actually means something (or else what's the point?) that calls into question the legitimacy of all the laws she's signed. Luckily the legal system all swear an oath to her, so this hasn't been challenged. But there's no doubt this is why Charles wants a different oath!
  11. I'm not getting this one but if there's a Platinum Coronation next year I am definitely in for that as I'm a huge fan of the sandwiches
  12. They might! I once had to phone up to chase a SotD delivery and the lady had to check if it had been minted yet. I assured her it had, but bless her she wanted to double check with her manager for me!
  13. He is certainly wealthy. I would say '(lower) upper middle class' in Japanese terms (a fair bit above a British equivalent in respect of money). His English - although heavily accented - is quite fluent, suggesting that he continued his language education to university level, which is not common with such proficiency among Japanese of his age (his voice and skin tone suggest a man in his 40s). Both would also suggest that he went to a university of some practical merit (rare in Japan at that time), has spent significant time abroad, and/or has fostered regular interactions with native speakers since. £95 is a 'nice' meal out for one in Japan at a noteworthy restaurant (also noteworthy though that their £10 restaurants put ours to shame). However this is a man who both appreciates the coin deeply and yet wishes to experience it in its purest form, and via touch. He is a gentle and appreciative connoisseur - taking nothing for granted. He is of the (uniquely Japanese afaik) mindset of treasuring the moment, the transience - exploring all states of the coin. The perfection, and then the imperfection (and yet it being, in a sense, so much more perfect in its 'imperfection' state - to some he has sacrificed something, but for him he has gained everything he could have from this experience). It's a very nuanced Japanese way of thinking, and very hard to explain. But it's incredibly beautiful if you can grasp (which I have only a few times). Very glad to see this thank you
  14. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about @HerefordBullyun my good man, and can absolutely assure you that his good friends at Scotland Yard didn't either (Kitty's tend to lick themselves clean afterwards, after all, and certainly before donning their aprons!)
  15. As a VIP, Sir Cliff of Richard never had to queue for his. He always loved, demanded, and got his 'logs on the fire' asap. So much so he wrote a song about them. And he didn't just love 'our Cilla' because she bought his old discowear..
  16. I'm not gutted to have missed out (I don't have the money anyway) but I really like this No knowing what it'll do of course, but I bet it looks stunning in gold. A series I can't see the Mint repeating within our lifetimes, and for that reason alone it's stolen the thunder from the (underwhelming and uninspired Tudor Beasts) for me, even if it might take a while to start to hear the rumbles (just as the Queen's Beasts did). Also as I predicted 4/5 years ago a full tie-in from Tudor times up to the present day, and I was going out on a real limb at the time but yes Charles I and II, so Charles will be the next monarch as Charles III.
  17. It's not a criticism whatsoever, as I always appreciate the very kind thought and gesture at that time of year, but let's be honest you've sent me worse mate
  18. You've stopped paying your audiences???
  19. Sorry guys and gals just had a thought...a William with the usual reverse...the Mint won't be able to resist surely?
  20. I am not surprised (alas) and think you may be spot on about 2019, as well as the laser etching etc. I also expect you're right about the 2000s being better still than he 201xs (I'd have to go to storage to check). My 2022s look perfect and I was excited to see the special reverse (despite it not being a favourite), but for the first time time ever I looked at them and just thought 'meh' (in terms of strike and presence).
  21. I don' t have the 2017 proof to compare, but the Pistrucci Anniversary Strike on the Day of the same year looks similar to a proof (in grading terms PL - Proof Like) in terms of contrast. However that year's proof may be even more stunning, I don't know - I've never had both in hand at the same time. For 2018 I have both Proofs and SotDs (Sapphire Coronation). The Coronations are very close, they are absolutely stunning strikes, but the frosting (matte) and polished fields are slightly better (deeper, clearer) on the proofs. It is clear to me they had higher quality dies and/or more strikes. I don't have any 2019/20/21 proofs but I was quite shocked when I got my 2022s just how much less impressive they were than either the 2017 SotD or 2018 (both Proof and SotD), just as Dave says. I'd be very interested indeed to find out when the quality dropped and if it was dramatic, or a gradual decline from 2019 onwards. In any case, from 2019 the SotDs have been Matte, so can't be compared to regular Proofs (maybe they did this deliberately?!!).
