Hi from a new member!  Having bought gold and silver of all sorts on eBay successfully for yours, I've just started dipping my toes into 'real' auctions (with a physical saleroom not online only) so maybe can add some insight here, assuming that you are trying to get metal in at or below spot:
Buyer's premium (added to the hammer price) is 24% minimum (20%+VAT) up to 28.2% most I've seen. So if you want a bullion sov for £430, you are going to bid max £340
No real value in using Saleroom or the other similar auction site - you have to pay 2 or 3% more buyer's premium (makes a massive difference). Easiest is just to register with the auction house and leave an absentee bid (no temptation to bid up then), paying the minimum buyer's premium
Only bid if you can collect - their postage charges are a robbery (£20 to send one half sov) ...and allow some value for your time and petrol (I got a half sovereign for £170 , plus 26.4% = £214.88 a couple of weeks ago (spot was £220) but it was an hour each way to collect it. Fortunately I had another win nearby to collect too but still...I've learned
BIds go up in fixed increments, unlike eBay ...for sovs £320,£340,£360 etc...which can give the chance for a bargain if the next increment takes the all-in price well above spot.
General auctions/jewellery etc seem to be better than specialist coin auctions - less chance of a dealer/stacker who will pay a bit more
All that said, I recommend having a go at your local auction houses... first auction I got a gold 50p for £650 + 24% (and that was when the spot was higher) though lost the other one which went for £680... half sov at spot -3pct..some spoons for scrapping and tomorrow will collect a 550g silver plate (£200 + 28.2% and didn't even reach my maximum bid)

Good luck everyone!  (Once I've found my way around here, I'll be looking to sell some maples and trade UK and CI commems for straight sovs and britannias to simplify life... also looking for someone who wants pre1947 silver)

Don’t remember the 1st, but the last was the 2018 Eagle, from your part of the world in Beaumont, Texas, whilst on a ‘shooting visit!’
Now, it’s all about Gold for me, but recognise that Silver, despite the difference in value, enables the collector to get the latest designs for a fraction of the price. Photo shows all my ‘keepsakes’…..

Thanks for the offer bud, but I wanted that Brit precisely 'cos James had dropped it!
Perverse, I know, but it had a story behind it and I'd laugh every time I held it.

Purchased a special sovereign off @James32 last week which means I owe a massive thanks to everyone on TSF as I've hit the 1kg of gold in full sovereigns 🙂 (That's 137 to save anyone counting 😂).
I started this journey just under 3 years ago after happening upon TSF after looking up what one was worth that was given to me by my grandparents when I was born. Gave myself the target of 1kg in 10 years (1 per month plus a few) and have smashed that. Honestly the best decision I've done and a great little nest egg for retirement. Here's to the next kg and once again, thank you all 😀🥰

A dealership may ask/record whether you're buying gold for someone else, even if so you might say no, and then later opt to privately sell that gold for 0% gain/loss on to another shortly thereafter. i.e. end up with gold bought in someone else's name and address/id, along with additional private sale/purchase/transfer records. For self insured/storage security reasons that might be good practice, no record of photo/id/address of where the gold might be being stored, but does leave the purchaser who used their ID to buy the gold potentially exposed to risks. Thinking along the lines of two brothers, one buys the gold using their ID/address, and then passes/sells that gold on to their brother who then stores it at their separate/different address. If HMRC have records of transactions/gold purchases stolen/lost and a thief visits the brother who purchased the gold in their name, opening the safe when a sharp pencil is held up to a loved ones eye would reveal a sale record/note ... no gold, sale proceeds ... spent, just a couple of grand in cash within the safe.
The UK has transitioned to where it cares little for citizens safety, more a case nowadays of buyer beware, the state gives illegal migrants more care/security than the population those illegal migrants mix into even though they may have past criminal records ...etc. Very much a case of having to best secure ones own safety/security. Call the Police and they might be able to book you in to attend in several days time, if at all. Or if they do attend they send out maybe a pair of barely five foot tall WPC's that can do little if confronted with a gang of six foot burly beasts.

Went out with a bit of spare cash today looking for gold....no sovereigns anywhere around my usual shops. Found this 1918 so in a royal mint case and card. A quick check online showed they seemed to command a bit of a premium....
I paid a bit more than I normally do but then if gold price keeps rising I don't suppose that matters....it will be below spot in a week 🤣
What sort of value would you give it?

I’m surprised there’s no mention of it being on the Specification card. ( I ) = Bombay Mint. Easy to check though.
Yes, leave it in the card.
My 1918 is loose to show comparison with the carded 2018. Pity there’s no 100th anniversary privy mark on it!
