Had a cheap digital microscope from the little one for fathers day along with some sweets. The sweets have long been eaten by the little cherub (apparently it was to save me from getting fat). Anyhow, I still have the microscope. It's only cheap but I'm going to have to go through the ones I've already looked at with a magnifying glass. I grabbed a random sovereign that I'd looked at but found that it looks like that date has some overstrikes as well. The picture quality isn't great but will try to get some pic's posted for all to judge, comment or just tell me to get a life.
It makes me wonder. As most of my coins are only bullion, How many times have they been struck/ pressed? I thought It was only once, but to have an over strike it must have been lined up and struck again with a different die.

As a mason sees from a distance a brick that has not passed the fire treatment well, as a blacksmith recognizes a type of steel only by the sound of vibrations and a breeder knows all possible and impossible breeds of domestic animals, so Dicker is an expert in sovereigns. He dedicated many years to this passion, studying coins, books, graphics, images, varieties, types and errors and he is always happy to share with others his knowledge.
But @dicker, not everyone has as many years in this hobby as you, some of us are just getting started, aren't we? 😊

In @Spyder's defense, I could mention the following very important things:
    1. He tested the alloy and the technical characteristics of the coin with the Sigma device and with the scale, probably as well with a caliper.
    2. Presented real and quality pictures of the coin.
    3. He immediately withdrew the coin from sale, having complete confidence in your expertise, proving that he really cares a lot about his reputation on the forum.
I'm sure it was just an error, not an attempt to trick other forum members.
    Kindest regards,
    Stefan.

I don't think I examined the photos of said listing in question when they were up. However, I don't think a simple mistake invalidates ones right or opinion on such things. İf Harry Kane messes up a penalty, does that mean he forfeits his right to ever take one again?
@Spyder's camera is not the best in the market, perhaps it was not so noticeable, when combined with pictures which aren't the highest res. He took many steps such as testing it for gold. İf it turned out not to a genuine sovereign, and the buyer addressed this to him, I guarantee he would have offered an unequivocal refund and covered the postage cost. He was hardly trying to binlord someone with a blatant fake. So, I think one should not acknowledge that he put his hands up, withdrew the listing, took steps to ensure it was gold, and bowed to an opinion of someone who is likely more knowledge about them.
İf anyone wants to take a better look at it, I can always take some photos of said coin.
Anyway, we should all be trying to get along, we have a nice community here, no need to sew conflict with each other

Some good points. If I may add some personal comments from my time here.
Tavex’s @TavexBullion range is small but one one the best. Bought from them and they tick the boxes of price, quality and delivery. They are my guide for bars on pricing.
Sigma Verifier are around £910 from @Fadeingstarwith all the wands. Worth every penny.
You really need to differentiate TSF with Flea-Bay and Facebook groups. It’s chalk and cheese. To get the real quality deals, you need to be a paid member and listings usually sell very quickly before it becomes available to standard members. You also have sellers selling bulk buys of normally hard to find worldwide coins/rounds/bars (example @Panda6Pack)You post a wanted listing and you are likely to get a response and fair price below Bullion Dealer’s pricing.
Paid buyers here have an excellent reputation within the PM community and are not looking to earn a quick £ from deceit or false representation. It is a big ’No No’ and will be called out and scolded by everyone. This is not Flea-Bay. Reputation, integrity and honesty separates us from the rest. I cannot over emphasise this. You will also see many YouTube channels who proudly mention TSF and are associated with the site. From BYB @BackyardBullionto GoldDiggerDave @GoldDiggerDave, you need to look at the overall picture. Buyers, Sellers, Grading,Pouring, it’s all here with member’s experiences.
TSF also has experienced Admin and owner @ChrisSilverwho runs a tight ship. Issues are resolved or expulsion. No nonsense.
Normal insured cost (SD)from buying a 1oz Gold Coin is £6.55. If you take into account, your tube return and time spent then that’s cheap.
Just my opinion of course and my experience.

This thread has really taken some wild turns over the last week.  It started with who is in, who likes the coin, what set, how many, etc.  The folks looking for a quick profit jumped in with debates on prices, mintage, the search for only 70’s, and complaints on RM service and quality.  Finally politics reared it’s ugliness with debates on KC III.
Let’s all take a deep breath and realize what we are talking about - a coin.  That’s all.  If you like it, jump in.  If you don’t or you don’t agree with the government, the prices, mintage, package, mintage limit ….don’t buy the coin or deal with the RM.
I’m a collector who loves his collection - some are perfect, some have flaws, but in the end I bought them because I liked them.  It’s a chance to travel back in time and hold something that was part of someone’s life - maybe they carried it in a war, or on their wedding day.  Some are worth a bunch, some just look good to me.

It’s a hobby (definitely an expensive one) but not my retirement plan and not worth raising my blood pressure over.  Happy hunting for your treasures.

My point was if Charles’s coins aren’t as popular as QE II’s, and therefore don’t sell out, the actual mintages could end up being lower than the Jubilee mintages.
As for rarity vs popularity… the former is objective, factual, and unchanging; the latter is subjective and fluctuating.

This is exactly what people said of the 1989 sovereign at its release.
Now look at how well it is doing.
The Platinum Jubilee proof sovereign of most denominations didn’t immediately sell out in November 2021. It took a few days.
I agree with your statement that the late Queen was special. But so is this new release of Charles III sovereigns.
    Why?
He was Britain’s longest Prince of Wales.
He’s also Britain’s oldest ‘ever’ monarch, by age, to be crowned.
He also started The Princes Trust which has done great things.
He’s also a great advocate against climate change.
He sadly won’t likely see any significant Jubilees which means, no special releases. As we have seen many of as of late.
Charles III’s reign may be seen as Edward VII’s reign.
In the coming years, we’ll go back to the usual, standard George and Dragon reverse with an uncrowned King sovereign.
You’re skipping an opportunity to own a piece of history because of personal opinion.
Now, remind me again, how are 1902 Edward VII Matt proof sovereigns doing?

Aldebaran reacted to Bratnia in Record Keeping - how do you keep track of your stack?
Sorry to necro-bump a old thread, but thought that better than the separation of a new thread.
Is same series gold not the same as for shares when selling the same stock, where tax reporting is based on the average costs rather than the prices paid for individual shares (gold coins)?
Buy three American Eagle one ounce gold coins at different times for £1000, £1200, £1300. Average price paid £1200. Sell one for £1200 and zero capital gain/loss, rather than being able to say you sold the one costing £1300 and made a £100 capital loss; Or alternatively saying you sold the one that cost £1000 and made a £100 capital gain.
Can't find anything in the HMRC manuals about that, but I didn't look that intensely. I guess even if not documented that push come to shove and HMRC would apply what worked in its favour.
Somewhat similar to if you FX exchanged Pounds for dollars at different times. Apply the average FX rate paid if/when converted back to Pounds again to identify the actual gain or loss, you wouldn't instead identify individual notes exchanged by their year/serial number.
Different series of coins and yes, distinctly different. Similar to if FX exchanging for US dollars and Euro's at multiple/different times. Two separate average price paid values for working out capital gains/losses when 'sold'.
If not recorded and reported correctly and you were investigated and found to have done things wrong I imagine the penalties could be harsh, even though you might not have been intentionally evading tax, found guilty of tax evasion and at risk of having (gold and other) assets confiscated on the basis of having been the proceeds from illicit activities.

I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of the CIII portrait/coins. However, certainly in comparison to his mother, he’s not going to be around very long. Therefore almost by default, should these not become more sought after in the years to come due to the limited number of runs with his face and funny looking hat on?
    Throwing it out there.

And that current sentiment is exactly what might create rarity of these coins in the future.
In 20 years’ time, will numismatists really care whether Charles was popular or well liked? I doubt it. I expect, just like numismatists (or collectors of anything!) have for decades, they’ll care about whether a coin is rare or not. Nothing else will truly matter.
Food for thought, I suppose. 🙂

It's hard to put into words exactly, but to anyone who has handled lots of coins or seen plenty of genuine ones, the fake looks like a clip art of sorts.
The real coins have a depth to the strike, the details are made by varying the relief in areas. The fake looks like all modern coins of very low relief where the detail is made by adding in lots of lines into the design. Lines which give hair detail that Edward coins really shouldn't have.

More worrying for me is not the hair, but the lettering on obverse, where is written
EDWARDVS VII DEI:GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FEF:DEF: IND: IMP: instead
EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP:.

The lettering on the coin from Ebay is identical a on the double sovereign obverse.

Edward is near enough bald. That fake has him having plenty of hair. George VI fake is even worse.  Every one who buys sovereigns should look at plenty of photos of what the real coins should look like. Look at also the rim of the fakes, completely different.
Have a look at this and then go back and look at the fake

Aldebaran reacted to arphethean in Discount stamp labels - like using stamps but for people who don't have the time for stamps!
This is for people who want to save money on postage but can't be doing with all the hassle of using stamps!   None of the faff and leaves only the benefits: cheaper postage and colourful parcels.   No sorting and counting stamps, no calculating the postage, no looking for the values you need, no arranging them to fit the space, no licking and sticking and no writing your address on the back.   All you do is choose the right label for what you are sending, write the address on the pre-stamped label, peel it off and stick it on the parcel/envelope. Take it to the Post Office. Done.   ALL STAMPS USED WILL BE COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS WITH NO EXPIRY DATE. However, note that the labels should be used before Royal Mail prices change, which is usually once a year in April. Otherwise the stamps on the label might not keep up with the price changes.   Labels are complete with Royal Mail tracking label and your own sender address. They fit envelopes down to Size 00.    Introductory trial price for The Silver Forum of only 70% of face value. Yes, this is slightly more than you can buy loose discount stamps for, but think of the convenience and the time you will save using these. I would like folk to try it out, give me feedback and tell others how easy it is to use.   Example prices: 1st class signed for, large letter, 100g Royal Mail price: £3.10. My price: £2.17 per label.   Special Delivery, 100g, insured to £750 Royal Mail price: £6.85. My price: £4.80 per label   Labels need to be purchased in multiples of 4. Postage will cost a flat rate of £3 for any volume. Orders over £100 value will be sent Special Delivery. As these are made to order, they will take some time to prepare. Typical dispatch time: 4 working days.
