Ted1945 reacted to GoldDiggerDave in A big RM announcement coming soon
Lol you almost sound as cynical as @James32 Ted every coin this year will be the first or the last……..or both I can see them double dipping on every coin like they did with the decimal 50p we had 3 versions of the same coin!

According to Atkinson's I should be taking up this "Opportunity of a lifetime " This is obviously stock clearance dressed up . "Don't Miss out- Get yours Now! " indeed.

Also for what good it has done me I have sent the RM sales team an email to say they got the launch wrong, especially the high end 50ps the masses would not hoover up gold piedforts at 2.4k and even the gold and platinum ones so they should have had a limited mintage for them.
They don’t have a clue what the demand would be so they have lit up the minting presses like Liz has done with our cash……the same result everything becomes devalued.
Fine if they wanted everyone to have the opportunity to buy one then base metal BU’s and possibly the silvers…….come on the silvers are not a keepsake are they? Most will tone by Summer 2023 and sent back for a refund.
it’s been a badly managed cash in by the RM, especially when people realise they put their prices up over the weekend just before the launch……suppose they wanted everyone to have one at the higher price.
as much as a positive spin the RM puts on this anyone can see the mangers are clueless and many of them know nothing about coins and even less about us the people who buy them.

True enough...
Will probably just get a BU 50p at some stage - I do like the design - to keep my collection of those current, but won't be buying a proof - or any of the other coins either - will be using my PM funds for more Gold - probably Sovs, and, most likely bullion Gillicks or maybe bullion 2022's if they haven't gone mad on the asking price...🤔

After all the years he spent as Prince of Wales maybe he developed a soft spot for Dragons?

Ted1945 reacted to GoldDiggerDave in Proof Premium Ponderings
There's too many variables to give a one size fits all solution, quality of the proof coin over the bullion price, if it has the slightest issue I would not offer much more than bullion if any.
The date/ monarch plays a part even for common years the same premium will not apply the to a 1/2 in many cases.
Possibly pick out some sovereigns on a dealer web page Chards, BBP etc and build a small spreadsheet.

Ted1945 reacted to Orpster in Proof Premium Ponderings
Dave already exhausted my limited knowledge on proof sovereigns via PM
I am reasonable on raw proofs, graded not so much but I spend enough time on this and other forums to know when something is way off. Easy to rattle off the price of the special reverse years, graded or raw, the rest 🤷♂️
Even when I am certain I know the price of anything unusual I always check and double check, eBay, auction results, sales posts etc. Would love to say I have never overpaid but I have, and knowingly on occasion. I am a stubborn fella though and will keep something tucked away for years rather than lose money, though happy to just wipe my face on some stuff if I want money for something. I will post below what I said to Dave in PM so my betters can correct anything stupid I said:
'Rule of thumb for 3 coin proof sets is £1200-£1400 for none special years, assuming its a Double/Full/Half. Some of the more modern sets though are Full/Half/Quarter and should be around £600-£800.
There are numerous years more sought after hence the price differential, all the special years (2002/2005/2012/2016(Butler Portrait) & 2022) and any low mintage years, 80's and 90's generally. These are a rule unto themselves and an 89 set for example is in the thousands, the 5 coin set is currently going around £11k. The 2005 & 2012 are (slowly) moving in that direction as well and worth picking up, and I think the 2002 is a sleeper, an unpopular design as special years go but so was the 89 for years. I am picking up as many 2002 proofs I can get my hands on, especially half sovereigns. I have 3 PF70UC versions now (while I don't generally bother with graded these were the right price) and a raw that I expect would grade very well. Currently trying to find a double 2005 but not having a lot of luck.'

Thanks for all your comments, so much for me to look into and the advice is really appreciated. The researching is really enjoyable , TSF really is a great resource and good fun . My first purchases in April were from the RM so I now fully appreciate the comments about them and their premiums (wealth warning required). Having bought a couple of coins from TSF members I have easily recouped my platinum membership fee. Very grateful for all the time you took in replying and the solid advice.
absolutely thanks

You're welcome! 😁
... and you've got the hang of it! 😁
I like the fact that buying Precious Metals fills the 'Retail Therapy' need we seem to have - but the things that you buy end up storing your wealth... and are nice to look at too 😊
I've spent money on all kinds of stuff over the years, but this is the first time I've had much to show for it 👍
