  1. Received more of these today thanks to @LittleMan. I'm going to need a bigger enclosure!
  2. Herd mentality round here. 🐘 🐘 Thanks to @DarthGareth for the 1/10th and @LittleMan for the 1oz.
  3. I was looking into those yesterday. Took me a reasonable amount of time to realise that a 'quintuple sovereign' and the £5 coin were the same thing. What size are they in hand? Brit size?
  4. Just catching up on this thread. Your point here James being that the credit card gives you the additional purchase insurance in light of there being an issue? And if not, you pay off the balance before incurring any additional interest? It's piqued my interest as I still get an account statement for a CC I had years ago. I may actually request a new card in light of the above and use it for any future eBay purchases.
  5. Well, whilst we're on the subject of sovereigns, I'm trying desperately not to suffer from 'size envy' thanks to @CoinBug's post 😵. I thought I'd share my 1/4 Sovereign received today courtesy of @DarthGareth. This represents a landmark moment for me. Alongside its bigger siblings, this little beauty makes up my first full ounce of gold. I appreciate this is possibly the smallest stack on here, but I'm pretty proud of myself - and it's been a while since I had cause for that. J Just a little over 6 weeks ago, I was still toiling with the notion that owning physical gold wasn't for folk like me. And here I am with an ounce of the stuff and two more sovereigns on the way (May & June's monthly commitment to my annual ambitions). Cheers! FNF.
  6. I usually get the option to scan a QR code or continue by authenticating via the bank's browser (on computer). As long as I avoid the QR code, seems to be fine. I even bought a new 2022 sovereign just now in the interests of science.
  7. I'm doing better than I thought. I've amassed the initial 100oz silver that I was looking to pick up and I'm on track for a sovereign a month - 5 in the bag so far. The fundamental goal now is to continue to pick up the monthly sovereigns and a new ambition, to obtain a 1oz gold coin before the end of 2022. Fingers crosseed on that.
  8. Ah, that's very interesting. Thanks for responding. I had not seen the other thread you mention. I only stumbled across this by accident when I clicked the 'next unread topic' button. I'll certainly do some more digging around. Thanks again. FNF.
  9. You have to be careful with fractionals. "No... I'm afraid I lost all my gold in a boating accident. Yes, it was the 'Barnard's Castle Annual Remote Control Sailing Regatta' of '22. I'm afraid I didn't see the replica of the Bismarck before it was too late, what with my poor eyesight. Luckily, they're great with that kind of thing round there - Specsavers on every corner! Didn't help with my 1/10th Britannias though. They're now part of Davy Jones' locker. Well, his petty cash tin at least."
  10. I hope you don't mind me jumping in. Fascinating subject and thread this. I've been reading with interest. I've had a passing interest in whisky as my dad was a collector many years ago. Nothing earth-moving but something I just remember bubbling along in the background and from seeing some of the bottles in the display cabinet. And of course, every now and then, you'd get wind of a certain bottle going at auction for eye-watering money. Following your very entertaining and insightful comments here, I'll certainly be keeping my eyes peeled for a 2006 Foursquare. If you'll forgive me a novice enquiry though... I wondered, is there a general parallel to be drawn between investment spirits and investment PMs? I'll explain what I mean... There are sought-after bottles. Special editions, rarities, the whisky / rum equivalents of 'low mintages' etc. The same applies to PMs - especially if you include nuimismatic elements. But also, there's the 'bullion' end of the game. Stacking, not so much to make a killing at the other end, but to house wealth in a physical asset for a period of time, with the intention that it 'holds' it's value and hopefully beats inflation. Is that the same for spirits, generally speaking? At the bullion end of whisky (for instance) would a standard, retail bottle retain its value and have a consistent floor over 'x' years? I don't necessarily mean 70cl of Famous Grouse from Asda, but equally, nothing outlandishly 'special'. An example: Yamazaki 12 yr old currently retails in the £130ish bracket. A standard bottle of JW Blue Label - £100ish. Would it be reasonable to expect that they should outpace inflation if they were held for 10 / 20 years? Or is it really only the true investment end of the market that's got the growth / returns potential. I know it's all speculation in the end, just interested in your thoughts. (Because I don't have £20,000 for a 1965 Macallan, but I could scrape £130 together for a Yamazaki). Cheers, FNF.
  11. That's amazing. Whenever in doubt, choose happiness. Good luck with everything.
  12. Of course, as has already been said, this is very subjective and will be different for everyone. Availability, affordability, aesthetics and storage (or something else that begins with 'a') are all important factors. As a new stacker myself, I also appreciate that part of the journey, especially early on, is joining in the conversation and wetting your toes in terms of community involvement. So I welcome this type of discourse as it all helps to fuel the passion for PMs that we all share. For me personally, my intention was to gradually build up a stack of 100oz silver over the course of 2022 alongside a 'sovereign a month' commitment. This would be the bedrock of a stacking strategy to help me protect 'wealth' (physical assets as an alternative to FIAT) over the neext couple of decades, which would supplement a pension or ultimately be handed down. In reality, I achieved my 100oz ambition within 30 days of starting. This was as a result of having an initial budget to play with and liquidating other assets in order to convert into metal (collectable trading cards and sci-fi collectables for what it's worth). I've also back-dated my sovereign a month intentions to the beginning of 2022, meaning I should have 12 by the end of the year. My initial stacking spree is now over and future stacking will be at a much more even pace. But this has definitely worked for me. Having a physical stack gives me a modicum of comfort long since overdue when it comes to my own financial planning. And I also subscribe to one other aspect that's been described by others. Not being immune to bouts of 'excess' or waste, there's a lot to be said for precious metals being your hobby of choice. Buyer's remorse is lessened significantly when the thing you've bought is 'money'. And when you're in it for the medium / long term (which to me is implied by usage of the word 'stacking'), then it's easier to ride out volatility in the spot-price etc. on the basis that I'm not looking to offload my stack for a quick profit. All this said, and in further recognition of the personalised aspect of anyone's stack, I would offer these words of advice. Have a budget and stick to it. Buy what you like. Understand your motivations for stacking and purchase accordingly. Keep asking questions. Good luck. FNF.
  13. Who would buy one of these? If you wanted milk in your silver, wouldn't you just grab an old Maple? #boom 😎
  14. These are really lovely. Thanks to @silversnowflake and lagging internets.
  15. I hope the day is soon here that I can publish a similar post. Congrats, it's awesome.
  16. Hey StackerBritt. Welcome. I did a similar thing not too long back. Came here to dip my toe and now I'm positively soggy. (And because I have a liittle insight into how this place works, I'm soft-banning use of the word 'moist' in this thread). 😎
  17. My local one had a silver bar in, last time. First time I'd seen that. The Bairds bar was looking at it side-eyed, in a 'hold my beer' kind of way.
  18. Let's not move on too quickly. I'm still enjoying this comment from Bully. For what it's worth, my favourite comment about smoking is from Blackadder Goes Forth: "I only smoke after sex. So back in England, I'm a 20-a-day man." - classic
