  1. Welcome, and happy stacking!
  2. Loving the little micro-paw feature. That's some sweet 'Four Nines Fine' you got there.
  3. Is this plastic pouch some sort of padded affair, or just a polythene bag? Do you have a pic you'd be happy to share?
  4. Exactly this. It was a feeling I'd never had when I was buying household stuff. Esspecially when the lady serving me (waiting for her manager to come with the form) got all uppity on my behalf..., "can we please hurry up, this gentleman is waiting for his gold!" 😇
  5. Hey me'harty. Thanks for this. For what it's worth, I do have some sovereigns that are currently in flips, so I'll probably ugrade them to capsules. FNF.
  6. I've been reading through past forum posts on this topic and while they always involve people sharing their favourite ways to store their stack, I just want to be sure there isn't a wrong way to do it!? I'm framing the question on its head because I think it's easier to avoid catastrophic mistakes this way, rather than just seeing what's popular. For instance, there could be 10 'OK' ways to do it - but 2 that you should avoid under all circumstances. Some specifics then: Is there any risk of buying bulk generic capsules from ebay / amazon, versus genuine Air-tite or Lighthouse (for instance)? No nasty chemicals in the generics that will tarnish the coins over the long-term etc.? Can coins be stored safely in the original flip sleeves or is this a no-no? Do capsules have to be exact? Case in point, Brits and Maples. Many places tend to recommend the same size capsule but the coins have a slightly different diameter. Is this an isssue meaning that capsules need to be bespoke for each different variation in your stack? If I'm not intending to handle them, are RM tubes of 25 OK for long-term storage or should each coin be in its own capsule? I hope these questions are OK. I've been overwhelmingly impressed by the responses to my other questions - and the interesting side-notes and conversations that have sprung up. All of it helping me learn things I wouldn't have known if I'd not asked the question in the first place. Thanks in advance, FNF.
  7. You're in the right place. Welcome!
  8. I'm so pleased I found this thread. I got two at my local Costco this weekend to start my stack. Couldn't have been easier - or cheaper - I don't think.
  9. Well the 'FD' is clearly 'Fancy Dan'. But I'm really struggling as to what the 'c' might stand for. I mean, it's right on the tip of my tongue... but ...
  10. I think it's that, and in terms of the farthing you linked, the pure nostalgia of wondering how many times it's changed hands since 1799 and the amazing adventures each coin has likely been on. [Must... not... fall...down that...rabbit hole...]
  11. I've run out of 'reactions' so you get the full quoted response. Thanks for this, I'll try and make my way through the links. 👍 FNF.
  12. This is probably true. But I suppose this will only come with knowledge. So I imagine that my acquisitions may indeed change over time, but in the meantime, I've literally just started so the key for me is building up a base stack. Given their recognition and liquidity, Sovereigns seem like a solid choice for the fledgling stacker, and something that I can reasonably expect to be able to add to while I gain more specific expertise.
  13. Yes, look at me with my 'new world' thinking. I never even considered that it was just the norm. I guess we just get conditioned to what we know, right? And as my personal vintage is newer than 1971 (even if just marginally), I've only ever really known coins with denomination stamped. Thanks @Foster88. Appreciate it. FNF.
  14. Firstly, sorry for a super-noob question. I know that the sovereign IS legal UK tender, so not looking for clarity on that. I'm just wondering: 1) why it's allowed to be legal tender when the coin itself doesn't carry a denomination 2) is there a reason it doesn't - historically? I thought there may some fascinating back-story. Or is it just that it's the most famous coin in the world, so why bother explaining it when everyone knows what it is?
  15. Thanks @Iacabu. I think just about everyone here is more experienced than I am, so I welcome the input. I have to say that in just the last week, I've learned so much. My 'sensible' head is prevailing and all signs point to gold if it's truly a 'value storage' / wealth preservation outome I'm looking for. To back that up, I purchased my first gold this very day - 2x 2022 sovereigns. But (and I say this in whispered tones because I can feel the shaking heads, rolling eyes, and tut-tuts from the pros), I know that I'll still be picking up some silver 1oz coins as I go. Why? Just because I really like them. And I think, as strange as it sounds, I'll need that visceral and visual 'hit' in order to sustain my ambitions over the long term. So yes, in 20 years or so I'll be able to look back and say, if I'd JUST done gold I could have amassed 'x' oz more - but a pursuit like this has to be enjoyable too (for me at least) and if it was purely pragmatic and practical, I'd probably lose momentum. Again, I appreciate how proposterous that sounds. But I'm a kook! So... my new strategy is something along the lines of... investment funds buy sovereigns and loose change buys silver Maples. That sounds reasonable for now. Cheers my friend. FNF.
  16. Very helpful indeed. I'm genuinely grateful for the generous responses! FNF.
  17. It would be disingenuous not to share this (as seen on the 'today I received thread) - given that it's pertinent to the discussion. My ratio of silver to gold has shot out to an impressive 40:1 in an instant. 😁
  18. I'm in this for the long game, so I'm hoping that I won't be stung that badly, if and when I chose to cash in any of my silver. How bad can it be, assuming that I'm already resigned to the fact that I'll lose whatever premium I originally paid? Unless the floor falls out of the silver market completely. All that said, with premiums what they are ... I have quickly come around to the fact that gold is a better (smarter?) fit with my long-term investment ambitions and I just need to come to terms with the fact that it will mean stacking coins with a much smaller diameter than I'd originally intended. 😆 But I can't promise I won't stack any more silver... there's just something about those goddam Maple Leaves... Thanks @FlorinCollector, I really appreciate the feedback. FNF.
  19. I know it's not much, but thanks to these little beauties, my first ever gold stack now stands at a mighty 0.47ozt and I couldn't be more thrilled. Here's to bringing many more of their siblings into our shiny little family in the future.
  20. Thanks @stefffana, I just read the entire thread! I need to learn more about 'junk', that's for sure.
  21. Thanks @Monsmoy for such a considered and detailed response. As you mentioned in your advice, I'm hoping that this post is just the start of a broader conversation for me with the knowledgeable TSF community. I've learned so much in just the last couple of days. The first thing to admit is that I don't know the answers to all the questions. I just had this nagging feeling that I had to start. I'm pretty confident that whilst the geo-political situation is not ideal, the key players don't 'actually' want mutually assured destruction. Still, as I mentioned in one of my other posts... my spider-sense is tingling. Two weeks ago I thought investing in gold was a pipe-dream for someone like me. Now, I know that it's the most sensible thing I could be doing. But I'm so far away from truly understanding the intricacies around most of this stuff. The world of PM has opened up like a new horizon - a map to a territory I never knew existed and now I need to work out the best route to my destination, while avoiding the hazardous terrain. The Gold:Silver ratio, dollar-cost averages, etc. etc. These are all new concepts for me to get my head around. As the old adage goes, "the more you learn, the more you realise you don't know." To your above points specifically: (a) I don't think I'll become attached to the stack per se. I'm just keen to have a physical, tangible asset portfolio. (b) In terms of sovereigns, I'm pretty sure I'll just be picking up the 'current' year. I've no desire to complete 'sets' or find rare versions. I have collectable trading cards to scratch that itch. (c) Insurance and storage are considerations for me... but my stack is some way from that being a real concern right now. (d) Yes. I hope that the TSF folks don't tire of me and my questions. (7) Without doubt. That comes with expanding knowledge and every day is a school day. Thanks again for your very generous response. FNF.
