  1. Had my eye on this coin design for a while! Happy to finally have one even if it does have a tiny ding on the edge.
  2. Love Mexican coins and this one has some lovely toning.
  3. It's a fair point for coins with numismatic value. Speaking personally, I also mainly go for bullion but I'm also willing to pay a bit of a premium for coins that I just really like (and feel will hold their value). For the first time, I paid £1300 over spot price for a graded 2oz gold Britannia and the Lion a few months ago due to it being graded a PF70 and having a really low mintage (103). I feel it's a good 'investment piece' and have since buried it in the safety deposit box and will just forget about it for a number of years. Hope it'll be worth more one day but it's obviously way more risky the moment you go way beyond spot. I keep thinking that I'd have gotten close to an extra ounce had I gone for bullion instead. Which will appreciate more - gold or the numismatic value of that piece? No bloody idea but thought I'd take a punt.. I guess we're all often juggling gold/silver content versus personal enjoyment and potential numismatic gains. Unless of course you're absolutely loaded..
  4. Great idea and very kind gesture. I'm going for £73.50.
  5. If I'm being totally honest, I have absolutely no idea mate but I think so! lol It weighs the correct amount, it doesn't stick to my fat neodymium magnet, and it has the correct diameter/thickness and writing along its edge. That's about as far as my 'expertise' stretches! Oh, forgot to mention that it unfortunately has signs of being an ex-jewellery piece due to indentations on the edge. That's what made me think it was real in the shop!
  6. Bought this for 20 quid in a local Cash Converters! Edited just to say I have realised this looks gold when viewed on my phone! For the avoidance of any confusion, this is a silver crown, not a sovereign!
  7. Thanks to @1stsovereign and @ilovesilverireallydo for these beauties!
  8. He's just being modest, chaps. I feel it's only right to share his incredible workmanship and share it with the world. Great choice of tankard and fabulous welding skills.
  9. Not bloody easy trying to photograph a little threepence but I picked this up in an antiques shop today. I know very little about them but the toning caught my eye. £2 well spent, I reckon 👍
  10. Finally got my first French coin and it's a cracker! I swapped it for a 1oz gold QB's Yale of Beaufort. Less gold but I always prefer older coins. Umberto was a separate purchase.
  11. Brilliant info! Thank you very much. I'm sure others here will appreciate it too. Congrats on your coin - it's gorgeous and I'm still drooling!
  12. Amazing coin! Absolutely stunning. It's reminded me of a question I had regarding Royal Mint's "Limited Edition" numbers compared to their mintage numbers. I get completely confused when looking at their website. For example, on this one: https://www.royalmint.com/britannia/2021-britannia-coins/the-britannia-2021-uk-two-ounce-gold-proof-coin-lep/ it states "Limited Edition 50" with a "Maximum Coin Mintage" of 103. Do you (or anyone else!) know why there's a difference?
  13. I've never done the auction thing before so thought I'd take a quick look. One of the first coins I got to see was this looker:
  14. These arrived today! Two little charming 1974 San Marino coins. 6 and 3 grams of .917. I believe the 2 scudi had a mintage of 77,000, and the 1 scudo 84,509. Pretty awful pics as usual - sorry!
  15. I can't help but think there's a genuine reason. He has 16 feedback (positive, I'd imagine), and did state there'd been an emergency before disappearing. Also, if someone has decided they're gonna burn their good feedback and 'do a runner' then I can't help but think they'd do it for more than £95. Many of us pay thousands here. I also think it's difficult to say what is and isn't acceptable in terms of time periods and replying if there has been a genuine emergency. There are so many potential genuine reasons that I can think of and many aren't pleasant! Death, coma, emergency travel for a loved one etc. Depending on the circumstances, a relatively low value transaction here could be the very last thing on his/her mind. I'm not trying to excuse it in any way, but when weighing everything up, it's very odd. I am guessing the owner of this forum has his real name and address as a paying member, but I'm not sure under what circumstances that data can be legitimately accessed. If something really tragic has happened, it's highly possible we'll never hear from him again - I know my family members wouldn't necessarily have a clue how to access this forum or know what purchases or sales I'd been involved in. In my experience here, the buyer pays money upfront, and provides their name and address. Responsibility is heavily weighted towards the buyer and I can't help but think it'd be a good faith gesture for the seller to immediately provide their full name and address on receipt of the funds. At least if anything tragic ever happens, a good old fashioned letter could be sent to the address.
  16. 4 Escudos - 13 grams of rare history. Really happy with this one! https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces26323.html
  17. Just for the record.. I didn't buy it either!
  18. 70 might be technically better but I love a good 69. Come on, don't blame me I was just getting in first before someone else. I've never even had one. But anyway, kind of related to the topic - I bought this old one quite recently: Was pretty much in the same boat! Just wanted an older sovereign to enjoy as I didn't own any. No way I could afford to pay the asking price of one without any major flaws given that I mainly collect bullion (although that's slowly changing!). I have absolutely no idea if I was ripped off because it was an impulse buy from a friend of a friend that also collects coins. £ guesses are welcome!
  19. Received this today! Gorgeous and heart-breaking in equal measure. Such a shame about the damage but it doesn't take away my enjoyment too much.
  20. I happened to spot this one on eBay! It was an auction and I didn't have a clue what to bid because I don't know much about them. Liked enough to win so I've probably paid more than it's worth but I'm happy
  21. Had this cracker arrive today. Unusual one for me but couldn't resist because of the detail! Shame my trembling hands and old phone don't do it justice - if it looks 'soft' anywhere that's the bad photo because the coin itself is really detailed.
  22. I really don't like coins in mixed alloys! Each to their own and all that but I'd put it in the same bracket as coloured/painted coins. Also completely agree regarding their art department/marketing images. Absolutely shocking. I have a bunch of newer sovereigns that I'll hold on to just because they're gold but I really don't like them. I do however like the oldies and Britannias! I'd swap my new for old if given the opportunity
  23. Some good info here and completely agree with the op and general sentiment - the pink sovereigns are nasty in comparison. They really don't look like gold and call me cynical, but perhaps that's the intention. Also, I have some rose gold rings that are beautiful in colour yet sovereigns just look different to me - even when compared to other coins with very high copper content. The final result is confusing.. Also, what's with the lacquer, or cling-film/plastic-wrap finish? I can't quite put my finger on it but it's like there's a coating of some sort?
  24. My wife would slyly check the weight so consider yourself lucky
