  1. so it looks like you have to shop for each coin on a separate page. that'll make things a bit interesting come scramble time
  2. So 2 different qualities of coin? I'm not too ofay with how this works, but BU is not proof quality, but not meant for circulation so it's a v high standard. What would the other quality be? Proof?
  3. Am I right in assuming the coins will be BU? I imagine a highly graded coin would be quite sought after, but standard value of they release millions of them. If the initial release has a low mintage it'll be worth getting some for sure.
  4. Just bought 2 sets for £125 delivered. Well worth a punt at that price.

    Rarer Sovs

Thanks @richatthecroft really helpful as ever. You mentioned being cautious of auctions, but would you still say that's the case for CotR and TCC? They are my 'go to' auctions as I'm not a fan of having to work out the premiums involved in other auctions and tbh, I don't really know other auction sites very well that I'd trust. The salesroom is probably not a bad shout to look at, but my overall point is that I'm more likely than not to look at auctions in my spare time as places to seek out something I'm after. I don't mind going via dealers either and Lawrence is obviously very well regarded and very active on here, but my limited understanding is that dealers have to make their money as part of any sale so generally speaking, the prices are going to be a bit higher. I suppose the dealers come into their own if you want a specific coin and they source it for you, as that in itself is worth the premium.

    Rarer Sovs

They definitely are of interest..... I don't know enough about them, but I assume they are rare, or is it the grading.. Or maybe both!

    Rarer Sovs

Thanks to everyone for the sound advice. It never fails to amaze me how friendly and supportive this forum is - it's all really appreciated. I don't discount the earlier posts, but the advice from @richatthecroftis exactly the kind of thing that I'm after. Some kind of treasure hunt that will keep me interested for a while whilst working towards something that will hopefully give me a good return. I didn't even know that 1911 set existed, but as others have said it, it looks incredible.

    Rarer Sovs

Thanks Lawrence, I've got a few sovs that I've stacked, but I'm quite bored of it tbh. I haven't bought any for such a long time which is why I was looking at the rarer types as I think it might respark my interest. Maybe I'll just have a read of Marsh's book and pick a handful to keep an eye out for..... Or maybe I should look to invest elsewhere. I've got a good spread of investments and savings so it might not be a bad thing to diversify further.

    Rarer Sovs

I've got a few sovs but I'm interested in seeking a couple of the more rare type. My last purchase was a 1937 double sov and I have no intention of shifting it as I think it will hold its value more so than other high grade sovs. Would anyone with better knowledge be wiling to share a handful of dates that I should look into for sovs (full, half, double etc..) that are have a good chance of appreciating within wide margins. My budget is anywhere between £1500 and £4k and I don't mind sinking all of it into one coin alone, or 2 or 3 if its worth it. As an example, I was interested in a coin being auctioned recently. It was an 1844 half sov, 2nd highest grade at MS64 and valued £2.8k to £3.5k. It sold for £4.5k which was above my budget, but I quite like the idea of investing in something quite rare that might give me a reasonable return.
  10. I got a PF70 1989 sov for £1850 a few months ago. I thought it was about the right price, but wouldn't have paid anymore for it.
  11. Got myself some lovely 1951 sixpense cufflinks
  12. What's the likely price of the 2022 piedfort?
  13. Thanks Florin - I think I will certainly look into it. I didn't realise I could look to upgrade and it would be quite exciting if it did indeed grade higher. The costs are quite a bit more than I was hoping for, but it would be offset if the grading worked out well.
  14. Thanks Florin, I'm not too offay with how the conservation and Grading system works, especially with upgrading. Is there an article of place you could point my towards looking?
  15. Treated myself to this one to add to my collection. Love it.... I've just got to keep the price tag hidden from the Mrs!
  16. I get that there are much fewer coins in 'circulation' but 27k sovs in 2007 is still a lot of coins for a standard design sov with nothing remarkable about the year or design. Will any of those years become sought after because of low mintage figures? I'd guess not in my lifetime. Maybe in 100 years, but I can't personally see it when there are so many other offerings out there.
  17. It says on the CoA a max of 1210 coins minted so am I being thick here in thinking that they can only replace 10 maximum and the rest will just be swapped from returned batches? My point being that I bought this accepting to keep it in whatever condition it arrived. Obviously I want a pristine coin, but RM quality issues are par for the course. I'd grade mine, but I don't know if specs of missing frosting go against the grading process
  18. Does anyone know if missing matte frosting affects the grading process? Mine has arrived and generally very happy with it. If I tilt it towards the light it does pick up a couple of tiny specs where the frosting is missing, but it's in mint condition apart from that. I expect most will have the odd tiny bit of frosting issues which is why I wondered whether graders overlook that and concentrate on scratches or other blemishes
  19. If you can see with the naked eye try and capture a photo that shows it without magnification. Then a follow up photo under magnification. That's how I managed to get the best response as I was pointing out how obvious it was..... But this is what I'm currently challenging now because I could see the mark on my quarter sov, so it's not guaranteed
  20. The magnification you are looking at is high, so the question is whether you can see any issues at 5x magnification or not. I bought a magnifying glass at that magnification for that specific reason, but I have 60x if I want to check fine detail. If you can't see it at 5x, there isn't much point raising it imo. That's the same standard the RM apply, but as I said in my earlier post, I could see a mark on mine at 5x mag and they claim its acceptable. I don't know their final outcome yet as it's still being investigated, but I don't hold out much hope and if they refuse, I'll just sell the set. It's worth knowing I've had some very good experiences with RM so I'm not critical for the sake of it. They replaced my Gothic coin without issue and the replacement was great. I've also had several other coins and sets without issue at all. I personally think the amount you spend per annum will affect the customer service you get. Naturally they won't want to lose customers that spend tens of thousands per year, whereas they might not be as bothered about losing you if you are only buying the odd item. That's not fact, but just my opinion.
  21. I remember when people thought I was nuts buying bitcoin. "your paying real money for a load of numbers written on a computer screen?" It's all a risk I suppose, but this one has a lot of things that point towards this being a risk with taking. Let the flippers flip!
  22. I returned my 3 coin set after first release and it was replaced without issue. I can't say that it was the same experience with the replacement though. I found the half sov was acceptable, but there were obvious marks on the full sov and quarter sov so I sent it back for examination. CS contacted me and said that the full sov was a bit of debris and they just removed it (great), but they said the quarter was 'acceptable' by their standards. I've challenged this as I genuinely can't believe something visibly naked under 5x magnification is acceptable. I'm still waiting to hear back from them re their final decision, but the offer was to get the set back 'as is' or get a refund. Just have that in mind
  23. I'm over the moon at this particular sovereign. I've only been collecting a couple of years, but this is something that will likely never be repeated ever again (certainly not in our lifetime's). So when you consider that you are buying a piece of history that has a very high chance of never being seen again, you've got to consider that you are very lucky. To put in in terms of figures, there are 7.8bn people on the planet, so only 0.000015% of the worlds population own one! there are 68,454,876 people in the UK - so in that respect, if you own the coin you represent 0.0017% of the population!! Just my opinion, but I believe these coins will become so sought after in decades to come. I personally don't ever intend on moving mine on and plan to tell my son the story that I bought this piece of history that we should keep in the family and pass from generation to generation. I don't quite think I'll ever be as excited about a few grams of gold again in my life 🤣
  24. I pressed refresh by accident 😕
