Hello from a newbie here... first post... I am an experienced buyer/stacker of metals and have recently decided to try and accumulate the entire 96 varieties of Morgans... I have about half right now... curious whether anyone else has done this and suggestions on the best way/places to look and whether you should shoot for graded coins or more middle of the road AU/BU type stuff... ? Definitely don't want to collect culls, etc... any feedback would be appreciated!!

Nothing wrong with collecting "culls" if they fill a space. The word culls is also rather negative, the sort of word a salesman uses when trying to sell you a much more expensive coin.

I / we used to call them space-fillers.

Sure, it's a challenge to acquire complete date or date / mintmark sets, but I believe type collectors make more progress, get more fun, and learn more.

Don't let @LawrenceChard put down us date collectors! If you want to do it, go for it! 😁

(It's die number collectors you've got to worry about, or those who specialise in collecting by denticle or edge serration count). 😁

On the topic of Morgans, there are some rarities I believe. It's a long time since I cast a glance in that direction though to reel them from the top of my head. Sometimes with key dates lower grades might have to suffice out of necessity.

I have about half of them as well. I go through spells of enthusiasm but as there are some real rarities, I always hit the block of thinking " am I really going to fork out to complete the set?" The answer is invariably "no, I'm not that keen". My personal experience of completing date runs is that I then lose interest in them and sell the lot!

You and me both.

I found a way around this though. I pick short types where a date run is not too challenging or complex, where some complexity does exist, I find a way to slim it down.

I've managed to complete a few date sets of late, having spent years trying. My Standing Liberty quarter collection was the one that finally cracked it. I narrowed it down to just the P mint, which threw out most of the rare coins. It's just the 1916 I need for the full run, but as that's excessively rare, I simply omit it.
