Coin Identification

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, can any coin experts help with this one? Got this in a mixed lot with lots of other silver coins, some pretty rare for a tenner. It was clear the seller did not know what they were. For the life of me I cant find out what this is... anyone?

Got this off Numista.

Inscription(s):
design; obverse; +EÐELSTAN REX TO BRI; Small cross pattée in border
design; reverse; SCIPE / TR IMO; Legend divided by sword right, inverted triangle below

Maker(s):
Æthelstan (924-39); ruler; struck in the name of York; mint

Jorvik Coin
- minted at Coppergate in Viking Age York

Lettering alternate readings >
[EDELSTAN REX T ~0'B RIT] [SCIPE TRIIO]
[IEDELSTANRExTOBRIx] [SCIPE TR IIO]

Name(s):
penny; denomination
Circumscription Cross/Sword mule; type

Note: It is a mule as they are obverses from two separate coins (see images below).
 The first side is from a penny of one of the Saxon kings, AEthelstan (Spink number 1093).
 The other side is a "St Peters Penny", with the Sword of Peter, Thor's Hammer, and the legend "SCI PETRI MO" (Spink number 1014), struck circa 919-925 AD by the Viking colonists in York. The legend is abbreviated Latin, for Sancti Petrus Moneta, St Peter's Money.

Thanks, certain this is a forgery then. Cheers!

Always cast your vote - Spoil your ballot slip. Put 'Spoilt Ballot - I do not consent.' These votes are counted. If you do not do this you are consenting to the tyranny. None of them are fit for purpose.
A tyranny relies on propaganda and force. Once the propaganda fails all that's left is force.

Have you got any pictures of the other coins in the Lot , would be interesting to see as many restrikes are passed on as originals .

Genuine hammered coins are very much thinner than the one you posted , about the same thickness as the card on cereal box as a rule.

Hi, these were some of the others in the lot, plus there were $9.75 in quarters, 3 euros and about a kg of other generic world coins. Not bad for a tenner!

Someone was after LV gaming tokens on the sale section a few weeks ago

I did send a message to see what they would offer but selling silver is not something I usually consider!

Mention Jorvik and I'm instantly smelling the weird smokey/sour smell they use in there. Also it kicks up the memory of one of the staff taking their job very seriously and scaring the c**p out of us (we were kids) 🤣

Restrikes are not the same as replicas or fakes!
