Russian 'sovereign' George and the dragon

I will be going to Russia soon, I have done some research and it seems like most bullion coins are expensive there.

Russia also mints it's own gold coins, one of them is very similar to our UK sovereigns. The coin pictures George slaying the dragon, and the reverse shows the crest of the Russian central Bank, the text is translated as "Fifty rubbles" "bank of russia"

These coins seem pretty comparable to sovereigns.

This is some info I translated from a site:

Weight of coin: 7.89g

Weight of gold content: 7.78g (1/4 troy ounce)

Finess 0.999 (I am guessing this just means the content of the actual gold in the coin as the overall weight is higher, so can't be 0.999. So actual fineness of coin must be 0.986)

Diameter 22.6 мм

Thickness 1.6 мм

I will hopefully be sourcing some of these for myself, and will try to bring back a few to the UK to sell or swap with other members if interested. Though I think I will only get a few as they seem expensive about £230 to £235 (at todays exchange rates), price depends on wether the coin is minted in St Petersburg or Moscow, for some reason unknown to me yet.

This is the site I found them on: http://proba9999.ru/ But I will probably be able to source direct from some banks for a lower cost.

From my research so far, all bullion coins seem to be expensive in Russia. So maybe there is a Gap for me to become a precious metals dealer in Russia :)

I have to say, I'm not feeling that coin.

Is rather go the sovereign route I reckon.

There must be a way you can get them cheaper while you are over there.

Yea it doesn't look so detailed, but I don't think that photo is so great.

here is the silver version:

If you skip to about 56seconds and watch from there you will see that when the camera zooms in, in HD, the quality of the coin is actually pretty nice. I think they look nice in silver. Don't know any of the details of the silver coin yet though.

I quite like the Russian silver bullion coin though, it's rather nice.

Silly expensive though.

I am sure I can find some silver ones for an ok price, people pay ridiculous premiums for SBSS stuff so I am sure if I find some of these Russian silver coins for about £19-£22 per ounce, the price will be alright. I just need to talk to some banks and do a deal ;)

I remember back in the seventies, one my school teachers saying it would be a good idea to learn Russian just in case they invaded us.

I like these coins and might be interested in one or two. Aren't other neighbouring countries coins likely to be more available over there like the Belarus and Azerbaijan etc, ones?
