Flying with Precious Metals

Last week I visited the Edinburgh Assay Office to drop off the 100g Silver Forum Bars.

Amazingly it works out cheaper to fly up with them as hand luggage than it is to post them!

Anyway - going through Airport security was an interesting experience!

I got pulled over - I was expecting this as the box of these 100g bars showed up as a giant block of solid dense material.

Anyway - when asked to open the bag/box to show the contents I said I would like a private room which they were happy to do, but I had to wait 10 minutes for them to get a supervisor to come with me. I also requested that there be two people in the room to do the examination so that I had additional witnesses in case anything went missing!

Needless to say the airport security staff were pretty speechless when I opened up the box containing nearly 17kg worth of silver bullion bars! They were incredibly interested and complimentary about the bars and the product and they were very understanding of the private room and need for an additional person! They even asked if I wanted them to arrange security to escort me to my gate, but I politely declined - that would just draw more attention to myself!

So the long shot of it is they were absolutely fine with me travelling with the bullion bars - none of them are sharp, or dangerous so it was all good!

On the return flight I had a box that I picked up from the Assay Office and a similar situation happened - the nice ladies I met at this end were equally as fascinated and they both ended up asking for my business cards so they could check out my website!

One of them told me a story about a gentleman flying out of Heathrow (about 5 years ago) who had nearly 10kg of 100g GOLD bars - he was flying to Dubai - now that is some serious bling bling in your hand luggage!

I have a VLOG of my trip to Edinburgh scheduled to go live at 2pm today so I will post a link here when it is ready!

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

So precious metals are a good way to get chatting to nice ladies and swapping details? Fantastico! There's a lovely lass who works at the local supermarket, I'll try paying with a silver Brit or two next time and see where it gets me B)

EasyJet - no handluggage weight limit

think of how much gold you could get in the average hand luggage case, too much to lift up to the locker!

Would the same situation apply if it was coins, or is there different rules bullion

Coins would be fine as well.

Bare in mind this is all an internal UK flight. You might have some issues with customs if you came into the country with this much silver. I guess you would have to have some proof of purchase and/or VAT reduction proof from the EU if you brought some back from Germany say.

But if you were taking in coins - you have the £10,000 currency limit to think about. Mind you if you had £10,000 face value of 1oz gold britannias (£100 each) you would have £100,000 of gold!

Which on would apply? The face value or the precious metal value?

One could even push the envelope further and carry 10,000 sovereigns or your own body weight in gold...

I'd be willing to bet that weight in Silver that both those airport security employees shared a story with their families that night over dinner that started with, "You'll never guess what I saw in the airport today..."

Great story BYB! Thanks for sharing.

At which point the kids cover their ears screaming, "Ewwww! Mum! No more gross airport stories!"

I will be travelling to Estonia to buy silver bars roughly around 7kg and then flying back to the UK. Will I have to declare this and then pay tax on it even thoe i won't be selling it on.

For some reason, this made me think of Bender the robot (from Futurama), and that time be sold his titanium body because he's greedy and he simply wanted lots of cash. So be ended up being just a head with a stack of cash in his mouth.
