  1. I agree completely. I think just about the safest place you could put money moving into the future would be into one of the highly sought after coins from the past graded as highly as possible. The supply is very limited for high graded examples and the desire for that supply is likely to always exist. My point above about grading - or how we handle modern coins more generally - having a detrimental affect on future values is simple supply and demand. In my opinion worrying about a slightly higher mintage really doesn't matter. What matters is the amount of examples that make it into the future preserved in a high grade. With how we handle coins today vs 30, 50, 70 or more years ago many, many more examples will exist at the higher grades which will impact value and makes modern coins whatever the coin a really bad comparison for the sake of investment to older coins.
  2. The reality is with how much the hobby has changed in recent decades its all a gamble. There are too many variables at play to know what coins wlll be future winners or even what a future winner will look like. I suppose given the comparisons that get made many want to believe that a future winner will resemble a winner from decades past but with modern grading not to mention the modern sensibilitiies of coin handling generally, future wiinners will likelly never get anywhere near the values of past winners. I'd even go as far as to say mintages such as those listed here will long term be meaningless and what will have a bigger long term detrimental affect on value is modern grading and preservation. This isn't to say none of these coins will do well in the future just that its impossible to predict and foolish to make comparisons to older coins when so much has changed in the way coins are minted then preserved. As someone who has bought into a bunch of these including the memorial sets I think my overall feelings match those of @Paul Given the current state of things (not to mention how the future looks) I'd much rather have those gold cons in my posession than a pile of cash that is constantly being devalued.
  3. It could also be that they're registered as a dealer with the RM and were allocated stock. I suppose once your allocation is confirmed you can either sell them normally as a dealer or out the backdoor for a much higher price via an ebay account. Coin dealers were allocated stock of the SOTD yet I've only seen one actually offering them for sale publicly.
  4. Chards and BBP both have it listed but not yet available for sale. I'd imagine Coin Connection will also have an allocation. None of these are currently selling them but must be expecting an allocation so worth keeping an eye on things.
  5. Looks like the dealers still have stock of most items so if there was a coin you missed out on head over before they too sell out. Coin Connection and BBP are showing stock of all but the SOTD Sov. For anyone who missed out on the SOTD Sov I don't think you've fully missed out yet. Several dealers listed it but as unavailable to buy today so seems likely they'll sell their allocation at some point.
  6. Coin Connection have listed what I have to imagine is all of (or at least most of) the releases with exception to the SOTD Sov. If you aren't after the Sov might be worth heading over there to purcahse
  7. I've used Wise for years now. Originally I signed up so I could send and receive payments from Canada more seamlessly and with less fees than I was subjected to at the time. They've rolled out more and more services though as the years have gone on and now I hold a personal as well as a business account with them. I use the personal account mainly when I travel to Canada. Under the personal account I hold a GBP balance and a Cdn $ balance. Holding both balances means I can use the debit card in either country without really having to pay fees. Canada has become as cashless as things are moving towards here in the UK so I needed a debit card that would work over there and these days its pretty much all I travel with - I don't bother exchanging cash anymore as its just inefficient compared to using my Wise card to either directly pay for transactions there or withdrawal cash there. I used to do my business banking with Natwest but moved it all over to Wise as I was frankly tired of the fees. I run an online business so its just a lot of simple in, out transactions. If I remember right I had to pay a fee to register and receive the business debit card but there have been no fees since so it has saved me quite a bit. The only drawback is that I've had problems having the Wise statements accepted as official bank statements when I've been asked to provide them. They eventually get accepted after some explanation but its not as smooth as it would be had the statements come from a more recognised financial institution.
  8. I'd say for this topic it really depends how you're looking to define worth. If you're definiing worth in a purely monetary or investment sense then no they're almost certainly not worth it. If you're defining worth based upon the enjoyment you could have from owning an object you really desire and find beautiful then yes, its worth it. These coins aren't for me but I've bought plenty of other things because I found them beautiful or because they somehow brought some joy into my life. Not everything needs to be an investment. If you like it for what it is then that can be enough and what that potentially brings to your life does have worth.
  9. I think the guaranteed grades as well as the amount of coins graded privately will definitely have an impact on the hobby in the future. Its difficult to imagine that this era of coin will be collected in 100 years time the same way we collect 100 year or more old coins today. You'll have a guaranteed pool of perfect coins out there rendering the hunt for the best example meaningless. You'd have to image coins of this era will also never see values the way coins of bygone eras do again because of the amount of them out there kept in good condition including those graded perfect. Today a top graded example of a really sought after coin from the past can fly at auction and achieve eye watering amounts because it might be the only example out there in that good condition. Modern coins will never experience that in the future because there will be a supply of perfect examples. Of course there will be many coins graded 70 today that go on to be coins people don't want in the future. We've already seen examples of this with 70 graded coins coming back then developing milk spots or even that black burnt looking spot that seemed common for a while from NGC. Those coins are clear to the eye flawed yet they still carry the 70 grade. Silver coins can of course develop problems but so can gold coins with things like copper spots. As more and more coins graded 70 present with faults over time how long before this undermines grading generally and that grade of 70 begins to lose its meaning? Bit of a tangent there but its worth considering.
  10. That is true that they can only produce so much in a day but as you say they could get a second machine going - it'll be interesting to see what the mintage is. The last of these I bought was the SOTD Platinum Jubilee Sov which had a mintage of 1200 and cost £675. The value of gold is up just over £100/oz on where it was last year but that is nowhere near enough to justify a £175 price increase. I didn't know that The Mint was open 24 hours for the coronation day. I guess that makes sense given how things were last year for the platinum jubilee day. I managed to get down for that last year booking in one of the slots towards the end of the day. By that point the staff seemed well aware everyone was just there for the SYO 50p so we were ushered through the rest as quick as possible to get to the SYO point. They must have really raked it in to now extend it to a 24hr day. Crazy as you say.
  11. I'll almost certainly be sitting this one out. The coins mostly don't interest me apart from the SotD Sov and with that being £850 at what you have to guess will be a higher mintage than previous SotD Sovs.. I'm not sure its worth while.
  12. Very sad news. My condolences to his family and loved ones
  13. I think if anyone was looking for proof that the RM really doesn't care at all about QC it can easily be found here with this release. How some of these coins could ever have gotten to the point of being put into a capsule and sent to a customer is beyond me. The silver ones are bad enough but the gold at what they cost... yikes. I can understand some errors being missed like the odd bit of missing frosting but minting errors this bad?!? Its hard to come to any conclusion other than either no one is actually checking these coins or they are being checked and the RM is knowingly sending faulty products out to its customers. Must be nice for them to feel they have a business so secure that they can continually treat their customers this way.
  14. I regularly do the same though going from Canada back into the UK and this is the guidance I've always followed. Now if you're looking for a work around to bring more there is a possability to do so with silver US coinage. Silver content US dimes and quarters were and indeed still are circulating coinage so technically I don't see why you wouldn't be permitted to bring back $10000 face value of said coinage without needing to declare it.
  15. The Victorian shield backs have been promoted in text and in video by various folks of influence in recent years. I bought quite a few of them several years back when I first started putting bigger amounts of money in gold and even then they carreid a slightly higher premium. Only reason I bought them over standard sovs or best value sovs was because of what I read here and saw on YouTube. So I'd imagine its just a case of more and more people following those voices of influence which has increased demand which has been noticed by the dealers.
  16. Did you wind up winning it? I am just seeing this but 95% sure your suspicions were right. The big selling point of the annual sets was that they were the only way to get certain coins with the Jody Clark portrait. This was the main way the mint marketed them. I didn't buy the gold set but did buy the silver set for this reason as I figured it would make the £5 coin the rarest version of that coin in silver. Obviously the same is true though only rarer in gold. Good find and well spotted especially if you wound up getting it.
  17. I suspect you're far from alone hoping the next is just a single coin. It will be interesting to see what they do next time around. You have to imagine they'll be taking lessons from this release.
  18. I am fascinated by how this release has gone. The comments here and on Facebook both seemed to indicate it wasn't going to be as popular a release as previous ones in the series but I didn't imagine we'd get into the evening and still have sets available to purchase. I certainly agree with other comments that the per oz price is rather bonkers regardless of what size or metal you're looking at. I wonder if thats them thinking they can milk people for more because its a Great Engravers release or because the edge lettering incurred more work/costs. Either way I wonder what effect this lacklustre launch will have on any further coins in the series. Time will tell. I'm glad it was easy to get the 2oz silver set and be able to keep the collection to date complete. I just hope they've done a good job with the minting of these as it will be super disapointing (especially given the price) to have to deal with any minting issues.
  19. Our clocks here in the UK haven't gone forward an hour yet so until the end of the month when we do put them forward its an hour out.
  20. Ultimately impossible to say but it surely couldn't be a bad thing for the coin and those who manage to get them if the mintages are much lower. From my own observations what seems to make the key difference with coins in this series value wise is how widely available they become on the secondary market. The Una mostly disappeared into peoples collections with only a few examples bought and resold so its value went up and up and up to match the demand. With the 3Gs and GC releases the secondary market was flooded with them and they're still quite easy to get so the values are what they are. If the mintage hasn't dropped dramatically the same will happen with this coin as the last two releases. The rumours sound good to me though and it certainly could help get the series back on the right path if they pan out.
  21. Yeah though thankfully they didn't pull anything like letting people who bought the gothic direct from them get refusal or anything daft like that again. Personally I'm pretty burned out from this series after the last release. I said either in this thread or some other that I wish the gothic would have been the end of the series.. it just did so much damage to the series as a whole and I fear each subsequent release will only carry on causing damage to the series devaluing the other coins. For tomomrrows release I expect flippers will do ok short term but given how the last two releases have gone I'd be surprised if tomorrows release wasn't readily available in the not so distant future at less than issue price. Who knows though? Perhaps they'll drop the mintages back down and the design will be one people have to have in their collections causing the series to be revived. Personally I'd bet for what I wrote above being more likely but we'll see.
  22. Sounds like you've made the right choice. If you don't need to sell them at (presumably) a loss now you might as well hold on to them and hope they increase in value over time.
  23. A lot more relaxed than previous releases. I'll attempt to join the queue tomorrow but I won't worry if I get a bad place in it. I suspect in a few months - if not much sooner - the silvers will be selling for around issue price or very possibly less so one way or another my collection will carry on being complete.
  24. I decided to finally start collecting silver proof round pounds earlier in the year so thats what I'm working through currently. Got my list together so just slowly checking things off as they come up.
