  1. It’s not all bad. He could now buy them after the divorce and not have to give his ex half an ounce of his QB’s completer coin. 😂😬
  2. Have you got the latest revised Sovereign book by Marsh? For information I’d start there. With regards to grading it’s based on a Coin by coin basis and comes down to the individual coins condition. I’m looking to grade a few of my rare Sovereigns. Unless low mintage or rare I don’t see any reason to grade but that’s just my opinion. The latest version of The Gold Sovereign by Marsh has just been released and it’s a good resource for research.
  3. The prices for the 1oz Silver proof seem to be ridiculous on eBay.
  4. Around five years ago I went to a vintage fair, like a posh car boot sale without a lot of the c**p. Something silver on a stall caught my eye, it was a silver plated salt cellar. I thought it looked nice, around early 20th century. I wouldn’t usually bother buying silver plate, but looking closer I saw the star emblem on it. I knew I’d seen it before, then it clicked, it was White Star Line. I asked the lady in the stall how much it was and she said “Oh that’s only silver plate, just give me a tenner?”. So I got my money out, she gave me £2 change and said “I’ll do it for £8 for you.” Off I went, I asked the price and that’s what she told me and knocked it down without asking. I knew it would be worth more than £10 but had no idea just how much. So the following month (before I sold the first one and knew it’s value) I went back and not to find another, I like vintage and antique fairs. The same lady was there with another one, worn and not in as good condition and she said she’d saved it for me. She wanted £5 for it but I gave her £10. I held onto the first one for a few months and whilst saving for a house deposit I put it on eBay. A collector in Canada bought it for £350!! He said it was most likely from RMS Olympic, the sister ship of Titanic. That was a good find.
  5. Be careful on the weight. A lot of antique silver candlesticks have weighted bases.
  6. @Paul When I first read your post I was going to say, I’ve got a bar of soap to wash your mouth out. 😂 Joking of course. However you do raise quite a good and interesting point. I suppose it’s like anything, one persons collection or interest isn’t for everyone. I imagine it’s the same with stamp collecting or militaria collecting for example. I can only say from my perspective, I started with Sovereigns which got me into gold. I prefer them to say modern minted gold coins as I like the history. It’s interesting to see that some don’t like the variations in them and the different mints, the grading, knowing which are normal, common or rare according to Marsh. But, this is why I like them, I’m almost at the end of collecting all the George V, small head variety. Just last week one sold for over £800, it was the 1931 Melbourne mint. I missed it sadly but I would have paid that. It is an interesting point you’ve raised and what someone likes and can appreciate, to others it’s just worth its weight in gold. Sovereigns get a big thumbs up from me. 👍🏻
  7. I agree that the new Sovereigns look a little unappealing. As someone who has both new Sovereigns, Victoria Sheild Sovereigns, George V and Elizabeth Gillicks. I can safely say, I don’t think you’d have the same opinion if you didn’t just have ones from the last few years. In my opinion there’s no comparison.
  8. Me three. 😭 I bought the 1oz Silver proof and it’s stunning. Now I’m emptying my piggy bank for the 1oz bullion. 😂 Except after my recent purcashes it looks more like this piggy bank....
  9. My elbow is still aching from polishing that sugar bowl. 😆 Thanks your support and for winning the auction. Stay in touch. 😊
  10. I’m signed up to RM emails but didn’t get this email about the Queens Beasts nor did I get the email about The Three Graces. I have also checked that my email with them on my account is correct. I heard about the 11th Queens Beasts or completer Coin, whatever you want to call it here on the forum.
  11. Part of my collection of George V ‘small head’ type Sovereigns, all except one purchased on the forum in recent weeks. Here is the 1929 Perth, 1929 South Africa, 1930 Perth, 1931 South Africa and 1932 South Africa. I also have the 1930 Melbourne and 1930 South Africa (not to hand). That’s 7 out of 10 and I hope to complete the George V ‘small head’ series by the end of the year.
  12. Some random 1oz silver coins from Sharps Pixley and I got this nice 2008 Kookaburra. I’ve only ever had one Kookaburra before so this was a nice surprise. The finish is almost proof like.
  13. I thought I'd start a new post for those of us who have recently bought WW1 silver medals from @ilovesilverireallydo if anyone would like to share them when they arrive. I'm happy to share mine with the rest of you and I can't wait to research them. Alternativley discuss anything WW1 medals related. I've started this in the general PM's as they are silver afterall.
