Around five years ago I went to a vintage fair, like a posh car boot sale without a lot of the c**p.
Something silver on a stall caught my eye, it was a silver plated salt cellar. I thought it looked nice, around early 20th century. I wouldn’t usually bother buying silver plate, but looking closer I saw the star emblem on it. I knew I’d seen it before, then it clicked, it was White Star Line.
I asked the lady in the stall how much it was and she said “Oh that’s only silver plate, just give me a tenner?”.
So I got my money out, she gave me £2 change and said “I’ll do it for £8 for you.”
Off I went, I asked the price and that’s what she told me and knocked it down without asking. I knew it would be worth more than £10 but had no idea just how much.
So the following month (before I sold the first one and knew it’s value) I went back and not to find another, I like vintage and antique fairs. The same lady was there with another one, worn and not in as good condition and she said she’d saved it for me. She wanted £5 for it but I gave her £10.
I held onto the first one for a few months and whilst saving for a house deposit I put it on eBay. A collector in Canada bought it for £350!!
He said it was most likely from RMS Olympic, the sister ship of Titanic.
That was a good find.
