  1. That’s a tough call. I would think that buying from a reputable dealer might be worth paying a bit more. eBay seems to have its share of people eager to take your money. If you are determined, get some photos and research the seller - nobody new, nobody selling odd lots of about anything. Be careful, it’s lots of money and if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Britannia Coin has three in stock (£1995)and they are a good company.
  2. I’ve never met the man (have spent a few £’s there) but always enjoyed his wit and insight. A few months back he said he would not be as active on Silver Forum and I realized have not seen his name for awhile. Anyone know?
  3. Looks like that Crawley offering on the SOTD was good to somebody- gone now!
  4. I would tend to agree that the significance of the event would dictate value over lower mintage numbers. This is the only SOTD that I have ever purchased and it was based entirely on the coronation. I guess only time will tell.
  5. My STOD has a few spots where the frosted finish is missing. I’d kind of describe them as chips, but it’s not damage, just missing. Does that really matter on this coin? Nothing I can do about it anyway, May 6 has come and gone and no replacement is available
  6. I received my SOTD today and it’s missing a bit of the frost finish in three or four small dots (a couple of each side). From a plain visual inspection it’s not bad. So my question is does that really matter on what is essentially a bullion finish? Is the main value of this coin the fact that it’s a SOTD on the first new sovereign in over 70 years or is perfection an issue? I have no plans to get it graded and there are no replacements anyway so I guess I just smile and stick it in the safe?
  7. There are so many reputable dealers selling ASE’s and of course the mint if you want proofs that there’s no reason to buy junk on a Facebook ad. You know a coin sold at spot or a couple dollars more can’t be right, so don’t bite.
  8. I have a question that’s pure speculation- is the 1/4 quarter ounce coronation gold crown a coin that will continue to appreciate in demand or will it dwindle with coronation fever? Obviously no one knows the answer for sure, but I bought a couple since the RM only made 1250 and the design was so nice it just seemed like easy money. Thoughts? Am I just trying to convince myself? Just curious if the more informed among us have a crystal ball ……..
  9. I have a few half sovs from earlier big events when a half was all I could/would afford. Have an 89, 2002, 2012. They are still nice to look at, not that much smaller, and certainly more affordable. Usually the mintage is smaller and that helps collectibility. I see them pop up at Chards and Britannia for fair prices. I happen to be a raw coin guy so I like the box, COA, etc. If you prefer slabbed, graded coins they are out there as well in large quantities All that said the real market seems to be in full sovs and sets, but buy and enjoy what you can afford.
  10. Received SOTD shipping notice this AM. Quite happy to see this. My silver coin orders are combined with gold crowns so I’m thinking they may hold the entire order until the crowns are ready to ship in June?
  11. I finally sat down and took a hard look at the 2023 two coin reverse proof set. I think this year’s design looks much better in the straight proof version. The reverse proof where the device portion is polished just loses the detail. Still no word on the fractional set
  12. Here is a series from the US Mint, comes in both silver ($82) and gold. They are 1 ounce high relief and really nice. Mintage is high and this is more buy cause you like it rather than resale. The 2022 is still available and the 2023 comes out in August.
  13. Love the new word @westminstrel. You own it but I’m definitely going to use it
  14. I ordered a four coin fractional rev proof set and there is no release date in mind - lots of releases all bunched together and with the coronation it’s not getting any better
  15. I like the direction this discussion headed. If the goal of the mint is to enrich flippers and resellers then the memorial sovereigns were the failures some have stated. If the goal was a beautiful collectible keepsake for a wide range of the population/collectors to celebrate a once in a lifetime event, maybe they didn’t fail. Regarding the appreciation of some of the more expensive issues, I’m wondering if we are reaching a point of pricing ourselves out of a wide range of collectors. If a single sovereign or a quarter ounce gold coin doubles in resale value people will grumble, but still are able to buy it. If it’s a five sov set or a larger sovereign or a 5 ounce, etc doubles in value, the market available who can afford it is greatly diminished. A smaller market means less demand and lower appreciation. I think that’s why the coronation 1/4 oz and 1/40 oz gold were such a hit - even when they are selling for double the issue price they are still affordable to a large group. Also why the silver is so popular. It’s always a quandary- make too few and only the elite seem to score, leaving many unhappy - make to many and the collectible appreciation potential dries up, leaving many unhappy. We must be gluttons for punishment to have picked this hobby………
  16. My 2 coin set is shipped and due next week🎉
  17. 1/4 oz gold is available. Picked up an extra for investment
  18. Everything went fairly smooth. Signed on at midnight, got in the queue and got pretty much all I was looking for including SOTD and a sampling of the others, including.25 gold. I think I am broke now……but satisfied
  19. They are minted pieces of metal. Collectible, yes. Investments, maybe yes. Coins, no. I love how they place a nominal value on these things like you are going to buy groceries with them in pinch. No, they are in no way coins and may not hold any value in the future, but if you like em, buy em and enjoy.
  20. Some excellent points made. As I’ve said before on this forum I prefer raw coins - the packaging of more modern coins adds to the overall appeal and presentation of the coin. Grading is a subjective process and a big business. Any time you have a service where you can get varying grades/opinions on the same coin is flawed - is your precious 70 diminished because another grader originally gave it a 69? Don’t you think a big customer is going to get better service and grades than an individual? I read the agonies of members here returning countless items for micro flaws, trying to outguess the grading companies in advance. For me this is a hobby with lots of reasons to collect besides perfection. This pursuit of perfection is a bit of a dead end. You’re never going to find it. Someone will always have a different eye than you. Now if I’m going in for brain surgery perfection is another expectation…..but for coins or stamps or whatever, maybe not so much.
  21. Photos look great and I noticed that all the silver issues are sold out. Not a bad showing for a design that generated so many negative comments. I personally like it - mine are due to ship in a week or so.
  22. Please excuse my ignorance as an American, but is the crown the King is wearing the same one that Victoria wore in some of her coins (gothic crown, florin, etc)
  23. Is there any interest remaining for this series? I liked the first two but with all of the historic events happening maybe these just got lost in the mountain of releases? Any news/rumors of additional plans? Paris, Hong Kong, Lisbon…….
  24. Received my premium proof set and pleased to say everything is in excellent shape. No dents, no loose capsules, etc. A very nice collection of coins. KC 5£ coin, followed by Tolkien, and then the Flying Scotsman are my favorites. I’m sure proof silver and gold are stunning, but it’s a big year for releases and I need to hold back for food and gasoline……..
