Alone and ... not good, more so when you also factor in inflation. 50/50 stock/gold yearly rebalanced and for instance 1980 to 1999 saw multiples more ounces of gold in your safe without having added a single additional penny.
Across history the tendency has been more towards the price of gold following a plateau/step type motion, with long intervals between steps. Providing you're in it for the longer term, average in over many years, average out over many years (retirement), average down the average price/ounce (stock/gold blend) then things are inclined to work out well.

Small steps with me. I. Bought a 2024 sovereign from Atkinsons and have added it to my micro-stack / collection. Paid for by selling some of my Swatch collection. As I reach sales totals for a sov I justify buying one. And do try to do it in a mini dip.
Next sov in my sights will be a 2020 as now putting a date run either side of the 2022 specials. I have 2023 coronation and standard and now this one. I have a QE2 2021 too so moving backwards.
Oh I HAD to get birth years gillicks as they are so pretty.
I'm currently selling my old marvel comics weekly collections too. If they sell I will be after a 1974 as that is when I was buying them with my pocket money.
A little insight into my plans surrounding a pretty boring bullion sov.

Postie delivered a nice 1994 Bank of England £2 to complete another perfect 3-coin set. 1994 case has a classic aged smell to it after 30 years. Like fine wine 😄

GoldenGriffin got a reaction from Cityman1 in What will premiums be if and when gold is £10,000 an ounce? (A sov at spot would then be £2350)
Gold has increased circa 10 x in the last 2 decades. I believe that trend will continue as a minimum given how far the 'can has been kicked down the road' for so long and the current system on life support.
I wouldn't be surprised if gold is at £10,000 within the next 10 years.
The way I see it, gold extinguishes debt, and there's a lot of debt that has accumulated over the decades to extinguish. While gold has been mined, it has been suppressed as low as possible, and some of that debt has fallen into other markets, an example is the housing market in my opinion. In the meantime, gold is bought up cheap before the revaluation. I think the revaluation will take place in stages and the first stage is when all mining of gold is done (economically viable).
I think we will have a new digital currency while gold starts to extinguish large parts of our debt. The new currency will give us more purchasing power - and importantly, give us the opportunity to continue to buy gold at the much higher value. Just look at the 1/40th oz coins on sale today...
Best wishes

Today, I received my 2 oz silver proof 3 grace's coin and it's gorgeous - perfect condition on first inspection.
I don't normally buy silver nowadays, but given that this coin was only available in silver at the time of release, I couldn't resist.
What a piece of art.
I really don't think I'd want to sell this (sorry to those who I may have led on!).

Hello dear friends of precious metals, for the weekend a few more beautiful coins that I personally like very much. Unfortunately, the 5oz in BU and Antique Finish as well as the 1oz in Antique Finish will apparently no longer be minted from the new Apollo onwards. This is a great pity for collectors of this popular series Gods of Olympus. I have therefore also ended the series for myself. Here are the pictures of my last coins. I wish you all a peaceful weekend and greetings from Maxe.

Hallo liebe Silberfreunde, ich liebe diese Nachprägungen historischer Münzen in polierter Platte.
Heute sind es nur noch Medaillen, aber sie bleiben das Werk der damaligen Münzmeister.
