🇯🇵 Japan 2 Bu and 2 Shu Set – Last Coins of the Samurai
For sale here is a lot of four gold coins from the final era of the Japanese Samurai. Each of these coins are cast from an alloy of gold and silver known as electrum and were produced at various points throughout the 1800's prior to the abolition of the Samurai class during the Meiji era.
Included in this lot are four coins, two having face values of 2 Bu and the other two with face values of 2 Shu. There are four different types in this lot and their respective details are as follows:
🏯 Japan 2 Bu "Ansei Nibukin" ND (1856-1860) – Cast from 5.62 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 20% gold and 80% silver. There are around 1.124 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🎌 Japan 2 Bu "Meiji" (Edo Mint) ND (1868-1869) – Cast from 3 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 22% gold and 78% silver. There are around 0.66 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🏯 Japan 2 Shu "Tenpō Nishukin" ND (1832-1858) – Cast from 1.64 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 30% gold and 70% silver. There are around 0.492 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🎌 Japan 2 Shu "Man'en Nishukin" (ND 1860-1869) – Cast from 0.75 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 23% gold and 77% silver. There are around 0.173 grams of pure gold in this coin.
Each of the above coins were cast within a range of years based on the period in which they were cast and left undated, hence the 'ND' ('no date') designation. All four will come in Quadrum capsules which have been meticulously labeled with the relevant information and KM number for each type.
These types of coin are often referred to as 'shogunate' coinage as they were largely used and hoarded by Japan's ruling military Samurai class. The use of larger percentages of silver than gold in these coins allowed the face value to be kept low, while the gold was seen as a way of the coins always holding value regardless of economic circumstance. It was for these reasons that they were often hoarded by the shogunate, particularly towards their abolition with the end of the feudal period in Japan and the start of the imperial Meiji Restoration.
The two example photographs show these coins hidden within the handle of a samurai sword.
You simply won't find another lot like this at this price point.

I am in the process of thinning out my silver stack as I would prefer to concentrate on silver semi-numismatic coins.
Therefore, I have reluctantly decided to sell a couple of my silver stackers that are now surplus to requirement. They are:
1) Aztec Sun Stone
The obverse and the reverse of these 2oz Aztec Sun Stone Silver Stackers feature the same design. The obverse is convex while the reverse is concaved to allow for stacking. The design itself consists of a beautiful replication of the original Aztec Sun Stone. In the middle of the design, there is a solar deity many believe to be Tonatiuh.

Surrounding this image are four blocks, which represent the previous four eras, or suns, of Aztec cosmology. At the time this stone was designed, the Aztecs believed they were in the fifth and final era of humankind. A ring wraps around these blocks with images from the Aztec solar calendar. This ring is accompanied by arrows pointing in the four cardinal directions.
2) Henry II Shield
The Shield of Henry II de France Silver Stacker is one of the most beautiful bullion issues of 2022, a shaped medallion featuring high-relief artwork and a light antique finish.
The obverse and the reverse of these 2oz Shield Stackers feature the same design. The obverse is convex while the reverse is concaved to allow for stacking. It features a rendition of the original artwork from the museum-displayed Shield of Henry II de France. In the centre there is a representation of the Battle of Cannae, (showing France’s struggles against the Holy Roman Empire), surrounded by complicated motifs and symbolism associated with the King and the office of the monarchy.
Both are in excellent condition and come in their original capsules.

Produced during - 1947-1956, Specimen weights 10 tolas around 117 grams on my scales…. It has marks on the rim/edge/overall & patina what you expect for a specimen older than half a century old as pictured. (Last picture shows an invoice from a (GEN1) 20 tolas, That is not included in this sale but shown for educational purposes).

Company Information: Founded on May 26th, 1938 by Pranlal Devkaran Nanjee in Bombay as Devkaran Nanjee Banking Company Ltd., it was later incorporated as a public company, DENA Bank (Devkaran Nanjee) Ltd, in December 1939. A note on possible years of production: The 5, 10, and 20 Tolas bars by His Majesty's Mint (H.M. Mint), Bombay with the crown logo and Dena Bank's Goddess Lakshmi logo were most probably produced between 1938 and 1947, 1938 being the year in which this bank was established and 1947 is the year when H.M. Mint was renamed.
After India's independence in 1947, His Majesty's Mint became India Government Mint (I.G. Mint) so the 5, 10, and 20 Tolas with the I.G. Mint's State Emblem of India and Dena Bank's DNB monogram were probably produced after this year.
In 1956, The Standards of Weights and Measures Act was passed which led to the Tola being officially replaced by Metric system (grams). So the 50, 100, and 200 grams bars were probably minted starting in 1956 until Dena Bank's nationalization in 1969 by the government of India.

Just had a read of this. 
Really bad on eBay's part. Clearly the guy is a thief. 
I've stopped with eBay for the rest of the year I think, this time of year brings out all the idiots and I can't be bothered with it. 
I've sold all year on eBay with no problems, in the last week I had 2 cases opened against me by buyers. 
Both never contacted me before they opened cases, just straight to eBay resolutions. 
I keep all my post office receipts and pictures of the packages before I send them too. 
Both the cases are now closed as one had been delivered to the wrong number (not my fault). 
One was left with a neighbour for 2 weeks (not my fault).
I can't be bothered with the hassle right now for making a couple of quid here and there. 
Hope you get it all sorted out soon, I'm having a moan about eBay but at least they are not holding money from me, from a blatant thief.
