George still sticking it to that dragon 200 years later. Surprised he's not wearing a dress in 2023 and prodding it with a dildo the way society's gone.

For a bullion coin it's in excellent nick.

I agree with you, the coin looks nothing like AU53 grade. 
Below is the NGC description of grading scale.
To me, it's more like VF35 or XF40 at best. Maybe the grader was in a very good mood on the day !

@ChrisSilver just received these two beauties today, shown with the original masterpieces proofs. they are the smaller coins. RAM masterpieces are severely underrated IMHO the proof strikes are superb & of all the coins & sets I have some more than 35 years old not one has any milkspots or faults.

As a reminder of our good and also beloved D - Mark, the Bundesbank issued this beautiful gold piece in 2001 in an edition of 1 million pieces. There are 5 mints in Germany, A=Berlin, D=Munich, F=Stuttgart, G=Karlsruhe and J stands for Hamburg. Here I present the mint A for Berlin. These coins are each made of 999 gold and have a weight of 12g. The price per coin was 250 DM at that time. Today, such a gold piece is easily worth around 700 to 800 euros.
So you should have bought earlier, but I wasn't ready then. Maxe wishes you all a pleasant day.
The complete series with all mints has been in my possession for a long time, so I did not receive it today, I cheated, please forgive me. 🥂

Got a little package inbound from @Clockpuncher, not the type of thing I go for (depreciating, unloved proofs) but I just love this coin and bought it as an indulgence. Got to be done sometimes eh?

Not bad postage time and a nice complete set. I need a box or something. 

The post did just leave it in hanging out of letter box at the end of my drive though.. luckily no sticky fingers found it . Royal mint also labeled as ‘numismatic item’ not investment metal for some reason.
