NGC Grading

So I'm thinking of having a coin or 2 graded. What's every one's experience with it?

Never done it so I'm just curious.

Can't quite figure out the pricing but I think it's about £45 for a sovereign.

But if it was to be a top grade that £45 could add a couple of hundred £ to the over all value. At the end of the day as fun as stacking is we all do this for an investment and if we can get a better return in the future for grading it'll be well worth it

You pay your money and take your chance. Depends on why you are doing it and what you want for it.

If you do grade it Dave does all mine and will talk you through it all. If you do it direct there are loads of fun fees with insurance etc

Hmmmm! That’s very subjective to the market at moment , I’ve seen plenty of graded items vetch very little over spot price ATM

I would say, save your money for a different coin to grade.  Can not see any reason why a 2018 proof sovereign should fetch a high premium with over 10000 minted and not being a special year.

It's the piedfort one so I think only 2750 were made so it's abit rarer that just the proof but I get what your saying not a particularly special year

The proof sovereigns you want to be targeting to grade are the Maklouf.  If you can them in excellent condition for under £500, those are the ones to grade. Those are now getting up to and above £1000 in PF70 grade.

Makes total sense now. Been on the look out for a cheaper 1994 for a while never realised they had different effigies. Only ever really stcked for weight. This is the first non bullion coin I've owned

All the Maklouf sovereigns were only available in Proof. The mintage figures were below 10000 from 1990 to 97 and the country was going through a recession. Most who were into gold at the time spent their money on the 89 three and four coin sets

So I only grade coins when I’ve purposely bought them for a price where if they grade slightly less than I expected I still cover my money, it’s tricky and gamble some times but for example recently I bought a USA mercury dime for £1.50 and graded for £28 and the guide price was £125, so realistically could get £100 for it, but doesn’t always work that way 🤣

I don’t have any Piedfort coins to grade but I would imagine that a nice chunky Piedfort might look undistinguished in a slab. I think I’d appreciate its thickness better in a capsule rather than a slab.

It would also irritate me when the NGC label states “Piefort” rather than the original “Piedfort” french translation for heavy foot, or heavy weight when it comes to coins.

Nothing to do with pies whatsoever.
