Bartering/Offers

Recommended Posts

I guess we all have differing views, for me I expect a bit of back and forth in a private sale and I have been known to make offers some people consider a bit cheeky however I generally expect these to be the start of a negotiation, have a bit of banter and end up where we are both happy and I fully expect the same back when I'm selling.

For me it's a bit of fun really, some people may get huffy about it but we are all different I suppose.

The only times I would offer something well below fair value as I see it is where someone has something awkward to sell. Take queens beasts for example, dealers are asking up to 3 grand for some 1oz bullion golds but they will only offer you spot to buy, really the only way to work out a fair price is to negotiate.

I always think as a buyer you can only negotiate up and a seller can only negotiate down so I factor that in to my pricing and offers. Hope I don't offend anyone too much.

I should have said that I do like a bit of good natured negotiation and frequently play along or engage myself. Ridiculous low-ball offers do p*ss me off though as does buyers trying to extract the last penny when a fair price has already been practically agreed.

@apachebleu I am confused that you think it reasonable to offer way below what you consider fair value in the example you mention. Surely the fair value you have decided on will have the awkward marketability of the coin built in? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Anyway, speak your mind, that's what forums are for. You won't offend anyone here, certainly not me😎

No worries, rereading it I probably expressed that quite poorly.

Using the queens beast example again I think they are great and nice collectors pieces but if I saw someone asking say 1900 for a dragon I can see how they may see that as a fair priceas it's a lot cheaper than dealers but watching sales here I don't think it reflects real world resale price and I wouldn't hesitate to offer them quite a bit less (obviously a no would not offend me)

I guess I go by my own idea of a fair price based on how I see the market, what I think it will be worth long term etc. and try not to get caught up in other people's valuations. If they don't like the offer it's not hard to say no and if they find no takers at the price they want they always have something on the table if they need to make that sale.

I hope that's a bit clearer but it's one of those ideas that can be a bit tricky to articulate as its kind of vague.

Oh just to clarify I would never do this on their sales post, they would be very poor form, only over pm
