Shield Backs and Gillick Sovereigns

Everyone will have noticed the huge increase of prices of a Victoria sheild reverse sovereign and a Gillick even more recently.   The Sheild I can understand but a Gillick is beyond me. I use to think over £400 plus was getting expensive for a Victoria but now seems the bench mark for a 1960s ?  Of course sovereigns in general have all gone up in prices but these types are much sought after.

Yup, there does seem to be high demand.  Gillicks are often to be found not too badly priced.  Shield Sovs much less so.

Just to add - Young head G&D not quite as yes they can be picked up at reasonable prices. With Gillick I think it's probably a year people were born thing. Birthdays gifts etc.  Not many of us born 1880s I'd say. ( hope)

Shield front sovereigns are much rarer!

Yeah but nobody wants those. 😁

Can I have yours then?!😀

The G&D was kicked into the long grass in 1825 followed by 46 years of shields. So in 1871 it was welcome back. That makes it  rather special IMO. Can’t complain about an 18 year old girl being on the obverse of either!……..

I only collected shields!

Not that I'm biased.
