I have another question and while I have the attention of the forum's shinning lights I'd best ask it: Are there any gold of silver coins that feature philosophers or philosophy (quotes etc)?

This is a Roman coin featuring Marcus Aurelieus, somewhat Stoic/Socratic.  I havent looked but im guessing there are Greek coins with the Owl of Minerva on them.  Its mounted now so you cant see it but the edges have been clipped, i assume for part payments of Roman deep fried mice or something of that ilk.

Pragmatic bunch those Romans. That's a great coin Zeuk, is it yours? Ah, the owl is something I hadn't considered, good call mon ami. Thanks for sharing. I think the hippies called money bread and they loved a good circus, probably burgers too.

Yep it's mine, used to study the chaps Meditations a fair bit and had various things relating to them ... off to Rome next month so will be keeping an eye out for anything interesting whilst being dragged around the shops.

Another nice piece i used to have but sold it in the end was a gold Socrates ring, cant remember their names but it was given as a gift a few hundred years ago between two chaps high up in the church, had "gratitude" engraved on the inside.

🤣

Would be great to have an image of that ring, what purity was it? I've tried reading a few philosophers and they usually arent an easy bunch to comprehend, the stoics were I think a little better in that regard. Not sure why but the forum is/was lagged for me, didn't get your reply in a timely fashion. As a store of  "generational wealth" what could be better than a gold piece with a quote you'd like to highlight for the offspring. Man!, lucky you, Rome ..... pity about the Mrs though 🙂

also, not sure where you consider the divide between science and philosophy, but there is this

That's a nice looking coin arphethean. I'm not sure science is philosophy at all, way too much certainty, despite what the scientists like to say about everything being up for grabs. I'd say science was the data that feeds philosophy.

The ring is long gone now unfortunately, but it was pretty much the same as this one https://www.1stdibs.com/jewelry/rings/signet-rings/late-neoclassical-gold-ring-black-agate-socrates-cameo/id-j_3597803/ ... i defo didnt pay that much for it or sell it for that much though.  I still have quite a few bits and bobs with useful quotes on, and ive cunningly left some little books of wisdom in the toilets in the house so the kids will learn a thing or two for life.

btw as far as books go would recommend "the inner citadel", pretty much explains the Stoic/Meditations and the underlying method/perspective being practiced, much more digestable and interesting than most.

An oldie but a goodie -

What did the philosophy major say to the engineer?

Would you like fries with that, sir?

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

Socrates would be turning in his grave at that lot 😄 Pretty sure Cicero would have been given a job though

I remember a tale about an ancient greek philosopher who cornered the market in olive presses but only dimly, idea was to show philosophers can do more than serve chips.
