For silver bars and coins: Neodyminium magnet for slide test.

I asked this above, but never got an answer: how does one know if a particular magnet is good for the purpose of testing silver? It can't be just any old magnet, as I understand it, but needs to be of a specific type, strength, size?

This is my neodymium magnet which can lift 12.1 kg. When you slide it down silver it is slightly slower than if you slide it down a metal that is not magnetic. Comes in a metal case for shielding, shouldn’t be handled much or put in pocket as it can react to the iron in your blood.

Same as mine, the power in it for something relatively small is remarkable.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

That's interesting, thank you! I might consider buying one like this, if I can find one.

What about a classic sovereign balance?

I'd love some of the experts to chip in and correct me or add anything I've missed but left to my own devices I guess it checks 3 things, the weight, diameter and thickness of either half or full sovereigns

Weight and diameter like so

And thickness through this slot
